Volleyball
Is Served

Sports news from the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Building of the
Jewish Community Center:
— Registration has begun for
the women's and men's fall bas-
ketball leagues. Women will play
at 7 p.m. Wednesdays and men
at 7 p.m. Thursdays for 10 weeks.
The leagues feature awards for
the first-place and runner-up
teams, referees, scorekeepers,
statistics and use of the new lock-
er rooms. Sign-up deadline for
women is Sept. 28; for men, it's
Sept. 29. Opening night for
women is Oct. 5. The men will tip
it off Oct. 6.
— An outdoor rollerblade floor
hockey tournament for youths
will be held Sept. 18. Games will
begin at 1 p.m. in 7-9 and 10-12
age groups.
— An indoor 3-on-3 basketball
tournament for youths is slated
for Sept. 25. Games will start at
1 p.m. in 11-13 and 14-16 age
groups.
— Drop-in rollerblade hockey
is being offered at 12:30 p.m. Sun-
days. Participants must wear all
protective gear.
— Registration for Sports &
Fitness and aquatics classes has
begun. Classes will start the
week of Oct. 2. For further infor-
mation on all these programs, call
the Sports & Fitness Department
at 967-4030.

Registration deadline is Sept. 16
for the Oak Park Recreation De-
partment's competitive six-on-six
co-ed volleyball league. The
league had six teams in 1993, but
recreation officials say they an-
ticipate eight teams will compete
this fall.
Awards for the first- and sec-
ond-place finishers, scorekeepers,
updated weekly standings, build-
ing and equipment usage and an
on-site supervisor are included in
the entry fee.
A 10-match schedule from Oc-
tober through early December at
Best Junior High is planned. For

Lund at the recreation depart-
ment at 691-7555.

Israeli Trio
Playing Soccer

Three players from Israel are on
the roster of the Oakland Uni-
versity soccer team, which will
open its season at 2 p.m. Satur-
day at Detroit Mercy.
The Israelis are senior forward
Eli Tiomkin from Raanana, se-
nior midfielder/defender David
Ankori from Rehovot and fresh-
man goalie Amir Tal from Tel
Aviv.
Tiomkin, Oakland's leading
scorer last year with 18 goals and
nine assists for 45 points in 20
games, is on a pace to become the
Pioneers' all-time leader in goals
and points.
Ankori had three goals and
four assists in 20 games last sea-
son. Tal, who has intensive in-
ternational experience, was the
under-16 national team goalie in
Israel.
Oakland went 14-4-2 last fall
and earned a berth in the NCAA
Division II tournament for the
eighth consecutive year.

Bowlers are needed for the Mr.
& Mrs. Club League which meets
at 7:30 p.m. Sundays at Country
Lanes. Contact Jo Ann Rymer at

Two Leagues
Offered

Two men's basketball leagues are
being offered by the Oak Park
Recreation Department.
The "A" league, for advanced
players, will play on Mondays
while the "B" league, for average
players, will play on Wednesdays.
A 10-game schedule is planned
from October through December.
Registration runs through
Sept. 16. The leagues feature
scorekeepers, updated weekly
standings, a wards for the first-
and second-place teams, building
usage and a game forfeiture de-
posit. For further information,
call the recreation department at
691-7555.

PP&K Contest
In Oak Park

The Huntington Woods, Oak Park
and Pleasant Ridge recreation de-
partments have teamed up to of-
fer a local Punt, Pass and Kick
contest at 4 p.m. Sept. 20 at Mer-
ton Colbm-n Field in Oak Park.
The winners in six age groups
(8-13) will advance to regional
competition Oct. 15 at the South-
field Civic Center.
Registration for the Oak Park
contest will continue through Sept.
19 at the Oak Park Community
Center. For further information,
call the Oak Park Recreation De-
partment at 691-7555.
