A

services and feeling bored." The
service included explanations of
prayers before their recitations
and discussions of the themes of
the day.
His move to Columbus four
years ago came too close to the
High Holidays for him to orches-
trate beginners' services there, so
instead, he typed the information
from the services and distributed
it, receiving an excellent re-
sponse.
The following year, those few
pages blossomed into a pamphlet.
"I realized I was onto something,
and that grew into this book," he
explained while sitting in a
Pikesville hotel room strewn with
the miscellaneous mess one
would expect from a businessman
traveling with his 3-year-old son.
The book, which can serve as
a preparatory guide for the ser-
vices or a sort of "Cliff Notes" to
be used during the services, in-
cludes insights into the signifi-
cance of the holidays, answers
questions about the holidays, and
provides a step-by-step explana-
tion of the services. It also guides
the reader into quite a bit of soul-
searching about the personal rel-
evance of Judaism.
"It can speak to people in terms
of issues that they're living with
today, like social issues, like mar-
riage, like raising a kid," he ex-
plained as he deftly disentangled
his own 3-year-old, Yitzie, from
around his neck. "I try to take ar-
eas of people's lives and show how
classic texts, one way or another,
have something relevant to say."
The High Holidays book "is
able to translate concepts of the
High Holidays into terms that
most Jews can understand," said
Shlomo Gottdiener, projects co-
ordinator for Baltimore's Etz
Chaim Center for Jewish Stud-
ies. "It takes the High Holidays,
which to most Jews are uninter-
esting, and not only explains
them, but makes them mean-
ingful."
Although he grew up in a Con-
servative household, Rabbi Apis-
dorf's rabbinical ordination was
Orthodox, and he has been very
careful to make his books acces-
sible to readers from all streams
of Judaism. "I have put a lot of ef-
fort into being sensitive in writ-
ing the books in such a way that
anyone can pick it up and feel
comfortable with it.
"My family was kind of your
average, suburban Jewish fam-
ily: went to synagogue on the
High Holidays, had a Passover
seder, supported Israel," said the
rabbi, whose friendly eyes and
easygoing manner make a visi-
tor feel right at home. "That was
more or less the extent of our
Jewish consciousness — it was
strong in Jewish pride and we
had a good feeling about being
Jewish — but certainly never an
appreciation that this stuff real-
