((
became the home of the Roth-
schild Public Library.
The Rothschilds later donated
their library to the city of Frank-
furt, and it's now part of the Uni-
versity of Frankfurt. Called the
Rothschild Library, it includes an
estimated 100,000 books, some
of which will be included in the
exhibit.
There will be much else in the
exhibit as well, including religious
objects from private houses of the
Rothschilds dating back to the
16th and 17th centuries; family
photographs, and rare coins ac-
quired by Meyer Amschel Roth-
schild.
He is the subject of the first sec-
tion of the exhibit, which contin-
_ties with a segment about the rise
of is sons as leading bankers. Then
comes a section on how the fami-
ly expanded the business, then an-
other on more recent family
history, including the Rothschilds'
support for Jewish settlements in
Palestine. A separate section de-
tails the history of the Rothschild
bank in Frankfurt.
Putting all this together — lo-
cating and assembling the ob-
jects, deciding how best to display
them, preparing a catalogue as
well as a book of essays — all this
and more has kept the museum
stnfrimmersed in preparation for
months.

But this is something they
planned to do ever since the mu-
seum first opened in 1988. Now
that the opening date is near, the
anticipation is growing, too.
"This exhibition will show one
of the great families of Europe,"
says Mr. Heil, who is working in
the illustrated catalogue which
will be available in English and
German. "They succeeded in es-
tablishing a family company
when the borders between coun-
tries in Europe were much more
extreme. Their European per-
spective was a big part of their
success.
"The Rothschilds understood
that a new era was beginning
when people could be in different
places and still have close contact
with each other. So in a way, they
are a model for how to meet the
challenges of Europe today. We
can learn a lot from them."
European in outlook, they were
also very emphatically a Jewish
family. "They always thought of
themselves as Jewish," empha-
sizes Mr. Heil. "Wherever they
went and whatever they did, the
Rothschilds remained a Jewish
family. Now we're bringing their
Jewish history back to Frankfurt,
where they began." O
