The Lord is Mine, and I Shall Not Fear

This year has seen an increase in anti-Semitic actions, from cemetery
desecrations to the terrorist bombings of Jewish institutions. Yet, the
greatest danger to the Jewish people comes when we are afraid to
stand with each other in public and declare our love for God, Torah,
Israel, and each other.
We have survived, even flourished, all these thousands of years, be-
cause Jews of every generation have proudly expressed their deepest
feelings of solidarity, no matter the risk.
During these Days of Awe come to the Synagogue and stand together
with us, your people.
We Wish You a Year of Sweetness and Peace

has attended an annual theatri-
cal innovation, the Festival of Al-
ternative Theater in Acre.
Art: Israeli art owes its place
in the plastic arts to a combina-
tion of two factors: in the first
place, a classical European tra-
dition brought here by the coun-
try's early painters and art
teachers, and second, the influ-
ences of the special qulaity of the
light, and the natural attribut-
es of the country.
In the space of nearly 90 years
(since the establishment of the
Bezalel Academy of Art in
Jerusalem in 1906), an Israeli vi-
sual art has been created, pos-
sessing. its own individual
character. Israeli artists have ex-
perimented with all the move-
ments and trends of the
contemporary art world from ex-
pressionism to cubism, from
Russian social realism to envi-

ronment and performance art.
Among contemporary Israeli
artists who have managed to
make the quantum leap from lo-
cal to universal recognition are
Ya'acov Agam (whose kinetic
room at the Pompidou Center in
Paris is a seminal work),
Menashe Kadishman, Avigdor
Arikha, Mordechai Ardon, Joseph
Zaritsky and Avigdor Stematsky.
Two sculptors, Dany Karavan
and Ygael Tumarkin, are well-
known abroad, and their work
can be seen all over Israel. Mar-
cel Janco (1895-1984), founder of
the Dadaist movement, Reuven
Rubin (1893-1974) with his lyri-
cal large-scale canvases, and
Anna Ticho (1894)-1980) with her
exquisite drawings and washes
of her beloved Jerusalem hills,
have also gained a major inter-
national following. ❑

n Israel's large cities, citizens
in distress may place an emer-
gency call to the police simply
by dialling 100. Police head-
quarters in Tel Aviv reports that
and average of about 4,000 such
calls a day are received. Many of
them report genuine emergen-
cies, and the police patrol cars are
at once dispatched to the scene.
Many of the calls, however,
come from persons who have an
exaggerated sense of danger, or
are themselves disturbed. In any
event, the police patiently record
each call, and take appropriate
action. Adar Avissar, writing in
Maariv recently, gave 100 exam-
ples of unusual complaints re-
ceived at the police switchboard.
We select a few.
A woman reported that a
group of prostitutes were gath-
ered on a nearby street corner.
Her complaint: They were all
smoking, and the smoke was en-
dangering the health of the neigh-
bors.
"A man telephoned and threat-
ened me," declared a woman.
"What time did this happen?" she
was asked. "On Tuesday, at 4
o'clock in the morning, two years
ago!"
A male, identifying himself as
a visitor from northern Israel, in-
quired if the police would recom-
mend a reliable brothel, with
reasonable rates.
An excited voice: "A stark
naked man is standing in the
middle of Allenby Road with his
hands in his pockets."
A woman reported that her 5-
year-old son was lost on the Tel
Aviv beach. She has gone home,
she said, but she asks the police

to continue the search and let her
know when they find him.
A man informs the police that
he saw a truck, with Gaza license
plates, pull up at a local public
swimming pool, and under cover
of darkness unload a vicious look-
ing alligator into the water.
"I have good news! The Messi-
ah has arrived — but he can't get
around because his donkey has
bolted."
A hysterical female voice: "God
is speaking to me from the re-
frigerator. Would the police
please arrest him." After investi-
gation the police reported to her:
"Everything is under control. We
have banished him to another
fridge."
A man with an indignant com-
plaint: "A neighbor has just yelled
so loud that he disturbed my rest
hour. "A patrol car reported that
the yell came from a neighbor
who had jumped or fell from the
building and had been killed.
The police always aim to pro-
vide satisfactory solutions. One
woman told them that every
night terrorists shone lights on
the window blinds in her bed-
room. The police ascertained that
she lived near an intersection
where many cars made turns,
hence the lights. She was advised
to close her blinds tightly, and
then the police told her they had
prevailed on the terrorists to go
bother somebody else. She called
again the next day to commend
the police.
Complaint from a woman that
her neighbors upstairs, using a
remote control, deliberately an-
noyed her by erasing the color
from her television.
