Just ask Carl Reiner about playing straight man to his friend Mel Brooks, someone not generally associated with silence. In the 1960s and '70s, the two collaborated on four "2000 Year Old Man" comedy albums, with Mr. Reiner playing the inter- viewer, eager to extract the wis- dom of the ages from Mr. Brooks' voluble sage. But listen to "The Complete 2000 Year Old Man," released in May on Rhino Records, and the crystal clear CDs will reveal something that the scratchy old 12-inch LPs obscured — Mr. Reiner actually is talking almost as much as Mr. Brooks. In fact, they're talking at the same time. "I never knew when he was finished," Mr. Reiner says in a telephone interview from his home in Beverly Hills. In these performances, Mr. Reiner's tenor-toned "Sir's" are his not-always-successful wedge between Mr. Brooks' scattershot musings on 2,000 years of human history. He responds to the sage's outrageous and continual de- bunkings of common knowledge ("Don't tell me Shakespeare was a great writer, he had the worst penmanship I ever saw.") with a bewildered "Now just a minute, sir," as if the everyman's truths suddenly aren't so self-evident. And throughout, Mr. Reiner — no slouch himself as a comedy di- rector, writer and actor giggles at the wild webs his friend weaves in what were, with one exception, ad lib sessions.
