Booth Festival
At Spertus
A connection between the Jew-
ish harvest holiday of Sukkot, the
creative booth (sukkah) designs
of leading local architects, and
the plight of the homeless will be
permanently established at the
opening of "The Chicago Booth
Festival — Architects Build Shel-
ters for Sukkot" at Spertus Mu-
seum, 618 S. Michigan Ave.
Spertus Museum invited var-
ious leading local architects to
create designs for the open-air
structures, helping visitor ap-
preciate and experience the var-
ious levels of spirituality of the
Jewish holiday of Sukkot. The
full-size sukkot (booths) also help,
uncover linkage between the tra-
dition of temporary shelter dur-
ing the holiday of Sukkot, and
The
conditions of the
exhibit runs through February
1995.
The full-size sukkot vary in.
style from primitive to tradition-
al, geometrical or sophisticated,
reflecting the individual design
styles of each architect. They are
constructed from an assortment
of materials, including fabric,
bamboo, wood and steel.
At the conclusion of the exhi-
bition, the collapsible and re-
mountable sukkot will be
auctioned for charity. Proceeds
raised will be donated equally to
the Lakefront Single Residency
Occupancy (SRO), and to a schol-
arship fund for Spertus Institute
of Jewish Studies' Masters Pro-
gram in Housing and Urban De-
velopment. The auction date will
be announced.
