religiously observant, but regard
service to the state as part of their
obligation. Thus, Shmuel, now
age 23, is today following a career
in the army with the rank of lieu-
tenant. Ilan, a younger brother,
served in the crack Golani
Brigade. Avshalom was in an in-
fantry unit and his younger broth-
ers, Elazar and Amnon also wore
Israel's army uniform with pride.
The other boys, well, when Eliah
age 8, Ariel age 12, Itamar age 15
and the others reach military age,
they, too, will help defend the
homeland.
But Zacharia and Simcha did
not raise their children merely to
become soldiers. They wanted
them to have an education, to be-
come gainfully employed, to re-
tain loyalty to their faith, and to
raise their own families in the
same path. Thus it is that eight
of the nine Makaiten boys have
graduated from or are still study-
ing at Boys Town Jerusalem_ the
religious vocational school and
yeshiva which in recent years has
been turning out skilled person-
nel in the the most advanced
fields of high technology. It is
worth noting that the school has
been recognized by the Israel Air
Force as providing qualified train-
ing in such fields as electronics
and engines.
Individual case histories of the
Makaitens illustrate how the fam-
ily ambitions are being fulfilled.
Avshalom, after completing his
studies at Boys Town is now a
third year law student at Bar-Ran
University.
Shmuel went from Boys Town
into a career as an army officer in
the Medial Corps. Elazar gradu-
ated from the same school and af-
ter army service went on to study
accounting.
Amnon followed in his broth-
ers' footsteps and is now studying
business management at Bar-flan
University. Ilan, after graduation
form Boys Town and army ser-
vice, is now studying construction
engineering at the Community
College in Ariel.
Itamar is a student at BTJ
School of Electronics; Ariel is in
the seventh grade at BTJ Junior
High School. Ammon is another
graduate of BTJ.
Eliah is only eight years old,
but his sights have been set. Let's
not overlook the girls, seven in
number. Armona, Semadar,
Mazal, Ofira, Alona, Oranit and
Aderet all have had, or are still
achieving a good education.
The head of the family, today
58, beardless, has a strong extro-
vert personality, and is constnat-
ly reaching out to help others. It
is not unusual to find as many as
30 people seated around the fam-
ily Shabbat table, as deprived
families are invited to join the
Makaitens.
Despite her maternal achieve-
ments, Simcha is a slim, pretty
woman who looks as if she is still
in her 20s.
