Healing
Wounds

HAIFA—A unique device based
on Israeli technology closes
wounds within 60 minutes by ex-
ploiting the skin's ability to heal
itself Called Sure-ClosureTm, the
device is less painful and more ef-
ficient in closing most types of
open wounds.
Presently being marketed
worldwide by an American firm,
Sure-Closure was developed at
the Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology by Professor Emeri-
tus Bernard Hirshowits.
"The idea is to close a wound
without the use of skin grafting

or more complicated flap proce-
dures," explains Professor Hir-
showits. "It is based on the
principle that when skin is place
under controlled tension, it has
an extraordinary ability to stretch
and heal itself."
The device is fitted on the out-
er margins of the wound and gen-
tly pulls the skin until the wound
is closed. The extent of tension
applied to the skin can be con-
trolled by a surgeon using feed-
back mechanism built into the
device. Within an hour, the most
open of wounds can be closed by
this disposable system, allowing
the skin to heal with minimal
scarring.

Everyday Life
In Israel

CAROL ALPERT

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Once again we skip the front
page headlines and take a look at
the Israel of everyday life—the
intimate, human side of life.
Attention Steven Spielberg.
A commentator in the Haaretz
notes that thousands of Germans
have now come forward claiming
that they or their parents rescued
Jews during the Nazi period. If
each of these saviors were to be
invited to Israel to plant a tree,
we could turn the whole Negev
Green.
A Track Record. Bedouins
serving in the Israel army have
had a remarkable wilderness.
Osman Saadi, head of there unit,
boasts that with their innate tal-
ents they can tell from footprints
whether a man or woman had
passed, irrespective of the shoes,
whether it was day or night,
