.aibt& STUDIO) designing innovative teaching methods for students of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. The Center for Educational Technology (CET) developed the multi-media computer program to allow exceptional children with special needs to use all their sens- es in learning to read—sight, sound , and even touch. The pro- gram employed in about 150 Is- raeli schools, has been so successful that the software has been adapted for use with regu- lar preschool three- and four- year-olds at home and in nursery school. The same highly-struc- tured and multi-sensory princi- ples have been adopted in a special program geared to teach English speakers to read Hebrew. The material was written to meet the specific needs and the pace of special education pupils: children with learning disabili- ties, mental retardation or emo- tional disturbances. By applying the latest computer hardware— audio cards, touch screen moni- tors, and advanced color graphics— the designers have succeeded in creating an innova- tive and dynamic learning situa- tion that allows children to use all their faculties in learning to read in an entertaining way. The program, titled "I have a secret—I can read!" is particu- larly user-friendly and requires no previous exposure to comput- ers. The computer—equipped with an audio card—"talks" to the pupils, creating a close asso- ciation between the spoken word and its written form, and en- hancing acquisition of reading skills among children with learn- ing disabilities who have diffi- culty linking familiar audial sounds with the as-yet-familiar written form. Exceptional chil- dren operate the program with- out a keyboard using a touch-screen monitor—"paint- ing" areas, moving words and constructing sentences. In other learning situations, the program can also be operated using a mouse in lieu of an expensive touch-screen monitor. The computer offers the pupil encouragement and praise as he or she progresses. Music and sound effects are integrated into each lesson, making the learning process an enjoyable experience. The lesson is reinforced by a va- riety of tutorials and games on three levels of difficulty that al- low the teacher to adjust the les- son so each child may progress at his or her own pace and abilities. The "I have a secret—I can read!" program has generated in- terest abroad, including a dele- gation of Egyptian educators and computer personnel who plan to visit Israel to study the software. While the program was designed for learning to read Hebrew, its multi-media design and didactic methods are applicable to other languages. 3 30 Happy New Year to all our friends and customers.
