Basalt victory stele
tory stele apparently erected by
one of the kings of Aram, relat-
ing his triumphs over his ene-
mies. The reference to the
Davidic dynasty suggests that a
king of Judah was involved in the
events described. The fragmen-
tary inscription may be inter-
preted on the basis of a biblical
account of King Asa of Judah,
who bribed King Ben-Hadad of
Aram to attack the King of Israel:
"There was a war between Asa
and King Baasha of Israel... So
Asa took all the silver and gold...
The fragmentary
inscription may be
interpreted on the
basis of a biblical
account.
and sent them to King Ben-
Hadad... of Aram... Ben-Hadad
responded... He sent his army
commanders against the towns
of Israel and captured Ijon, Dan,
(1Kings
Abel-bethmaach..."
15:16-20).
The inscription is written in
Aramaic. It was engraved in al-
phabetic script on a large stone
which had been smoothed for
writing. The words are separat-
ed by dots. Only 13 lines of the
original text have survived.
The stele was smashed in an-
cient times and this fragment
was found in secondary use near
the outer gate of the city. It is the
first monumental inscription for
the First Temple Period to be dis-
covered in Israel, as apparently,
it was not common for the kings
of Judah and Israel to erect mon-
uments in their honor.
