Best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year. IRENE LUSKY AND FAMILY Slice of Life In Israel CARL ALPERT SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS Israel's courts of justice are still a wonderful source of stories and information, casting light on sur- prising aspects of life in Israel. Here justice is not only done, but is also seen to have been done. It's all a matter of Tastes. Aharon Moyal, serving seven years in jail for various criminal offenses, petitioned the District Court in Tel Aviv to instruct the prison authorities to provide onion and garlic with his meals. He maintained the food was not tasty enough. Judge Aryeh Even- Ari ruled that the jailers should enable Mr. Moyal to purchase onion and garlic in the prison can- teen, failing which they must pro- vide him with these items with his meals. Belated Wedding Present. The bride and groom, Nurit and Eli Tafiro, and the 400 guests at their wedding ceremony were left standing there when the officiat- ing rabbi failed to show up as promised. For the pain and suf- fering caused, Judge Eliezer Fich- man of the Haifa Magistrates' Court, ordered Rabbi Elihu Mai- mon of Kiryat Ata to pay the cou- ple damages of 40,000 shekels. The ruling came 3M years after the wedding. A Fishy Story. "I was only standing by the fish pond," main- tained Rafi Ben-Hamo of Beth Shean in his 30,000 shekel suit against Kibbutz Geva. He claimed that a large fish leaped out of the pool, bit him in his left leg, and left him with permanent injuries. The kibbutz defense: The charge sounds illogical and should be dismissed. The judge: His verdict not available. It's a Basic Woman's Right to Fix Her Age. Ella Cantor, of Haifa, an immigrant from Moscow, maintained that her Russian documents mistakenly listed her as 57, when she was in fact only 37. She brought two witnesses who knew her. Both the Magistrates' Court and the Higher District Court to which the government appealed, ruled in her favor, noting that the usu- al requests are to have a higher age certified, so the applicant can qualify sooner for a National In- surance pension. Unidentifiable. Eitan. Bar of Jerusalem and his wife, Tami, sued in Beershba District Court demanding that the word "Jew" be deleted from their identity pa- pers, as indication of their reli- gion or nationality. They claimed that they observed nothing and believed in nothing and did not want to be labeled in any way which could lead to discrimina- tion against them. Judge Yadin Timor ruled in their favor. tannin mci362 to all our friends and relatives.
