Cricket
In Israel

Cricket is not often associated
with Israel, but the game thrives
here thanks in large part to the
contribution of Indian Jewry.
The Indian domination of local
cricket can be gauged from the
fact that the Israeli domestic
league has 14 teams, of which 12
have a majority of players of In-
dian Origin. the remaining crick-
eters come largely from other
English-speaking countries:
Great Britain, South Africa, and
Australia.
The southern port city of Ash-

dod, with its large Indian Jewish
community, is the center of Israeli
cricket. The city has five teams
and three grounds. Noah David-
son, who hails from Bombay, is
the secretary of the Israel Cricket
Association and a former profes-
sional cricketer with Central Rail-
ways in Bombay
"When I immigrated to Israel
in 1969," recounts Mr. Davidson,
"1 made extensive enquiries about
the possibility of playing cricket
in the country. If there had been
no cricket, I would have been
depressed, to say the least."
It was another former Born-
bayan, Harry Jonathan, who set-
tled in Ashdod in the 1950s and
laid the foundations for what
became the Israel Cricket Asso-
ciation. And yet another ex-
Bombayan, Ezra Ashtankar, is
currently chairman of the Israel
Cricket Association.
Under Mr. Ashtankar's shrewd
leadership, Israel has developed
from an isolated outpost of cricket
into an integrated member of the
international cricketing commu-
nity. The country competes in the
World Cup, though it has yet to
make any impact on the interna-
tional scene.
Mr. Ashtankar recently trav-
eled back to India with Mr. David-
son following the opening of full
diplomatic relations betwee Israel
and India. There they met with
their cricketing counterparts and
agreed that groups of Israeli crick-
eting youngsters should be sent
to India each year to coaching
camps. Through such coaching
camps, Israel hopes to elevate its
cricketing standards. LI
