old mood is to be

Bet Hameiri.

The old building, liberally
pock-marked by bullets and re-
minders of how the Jewish pop-
ulation was saved in 1948,
though vastly out-numbered by
Arabs. A rabbi explained: by
miracle and by deed. The deed
was that everybody recited
Psalms. The miracle? The Pal-
mach came in time.

Once again, Safed transcending
two worlds.
Another link between the old
and the new: It was here that
Rabbi Shlomo Halevi Alkabetz
composed the Sabbath hymn
"Lecha Dodi" which one can hum
while sipping a Pepsi-Cola. And
here, too, we had the good fortune
to meet Sari Tzvieg, composer of
the music of "Yedid Nefesh".
Written here only a quarter of a
century ago, the tune has swept
the Jewish world, and is today
sung in synagogues everywhere.
Worshippers think it is a tradi-
tional melody, little realizing that
Sari still composes and sings and
lives in Safed.

which is unlike anything else in
Israel.
A successful attempt to pre-
serve the old mood is to be found
in Bet Hameiri, a 400-year-old
cluster of houses which have been
transformed into a museum. It
is not one of those sterile places
where pictures hang on white
walls, with large expanses of
space, but a veritable clutter of
memorabilia of the people and
the life of the Safed of old, up to
very recent years, when attempts
were made to "modernize" it.
One can begin to understand
the spirit of the real, the original
Safed by looking at the picture in
Bet Hameiri of one Itzik Mima,
a town character, who used to go
up to his roof to direct airplane
traffic over the town. Proof of his
efficiency: There was never an
accident. And then it came to us
in a flash. Safed can not be
judged by any of the criteria
which we normally apply to oth-
er towns in Israel or elsewhere.
It is in a category by itself.
Only in Safed would one find
a painting, depicting the Muslim
Dome of the Rock, displayed on
the ceiling of one of the old syna-
gogues.
