Mortar Fire Wounds Soldier Tel Aviv (JTA) — An Israeli sol- dier was lightly wounded when mortars fired by the Islamic fun- damentalist Hezbollah hit an Is- rael Defense Force post on the northern edge of the southern Lebanon security zone. According to Israeli security sources, Hezbollah guerrillas not only fired mortars and rockets at two Israeli positions in southern Lebanon, but also fired at an army post located in northern Is- rael near the border with Lebanon, wounding a second Is- raeli soldier. A Hezbollah source denied that any attack had been launched on positions within Israel. It was not immediately clear whether the Hezbollah attacks were in retaliation for the acci- dental shelling of a village. "Our goal is to create not just a synagogue but a community center," said Rabbi Berel Lazar, the head rabbi of the synagogue, which is run by the Chabad movement of the Lubavitch Cha- sidim. 'This is urgent, and we're turning to Jewish people from all over the world for support." The Aug. 2 groundbreaking was attended by about 250 peo- ple, including Israeli Chief Ashke- nazic Rabbi Yisrael Lau; U.S. Ambassador Thomas Pickering; Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov; and Yaakov Elztain, an Argen- tinean entrepreneur who got his first business break in Russia and who has contributed about $1 million to a new building fund for the synagogue and community center. The new building will rise from the site of the remains of the Ma- rina Roscha Synagogue, which was built in 1926 and devastat- ed by a fire late in December 1993. The cause of the fire remains unknown. It is widely believed to have been caused by either arson or faulty wiring, but a final an- swer has not yet been provided by fire investigators. "In the beginning, the city was trying not to have a fire investi- gation, but then there was pres- sure from abroad," said Rabbi Lazar. "Since then, the investi- gation has been going very slow- ly and with little result. The city feels that if they do too much in- vestigating, it will bring out anti- Semitism" among members of the local community.
