ing program for prospective vol-
unteers. The five-week

cer, home care, communication
and listening skills, legal issues,
the grief process and bereave-
ment services.

offering companionship, friend-

respite support for the patient's

• The Red Cross reports it is
suffering from a shortage of vol-
unteer drivers who operate its
vehicles, delivering blood to
Wayne County hospitals and
transporting volunteers to
blood donation sites. Drivers
must be available for early
morning and late evening shifts
on a weekly schedule. Training
is provided. No qualifications,
except a good driving record,

parenting program seeks vol-
unteers to assist new parents.
Volunteers offer new families
guidance on parenting issues
and baby care. They complete
24 hours of training before be-
ing paired with a family. For

• Cottage Hospice offers vol-
unteer training to men and
women interested in providing
support to terminally ill pa-
tients. The Caring Person Pro-

Research
• The Wayne State University
Center for Osteoporosis Re-
search is seeking women to par-
ticipate in a study which aims
to prevent bone loss related to
osteoporosis. Researchers are
studying the use of a new in-
vestigational hormone which
has been shown in European
studies to prevent post-
menopausal bone loss without
causing the usual side effects
of anti-osteoporosis medica-
tions.
To be eligible, women must
be at least 45, post-menopausal
for between one and four years,
not presently taking estrogen
and have no history of or treat-
ment for blood clots, breast can-
cer, serious heart disease or
osteoporosis. They must not
have had a hysterectomy and
must be a non-smoker or a
smoker who has less than 10
cigarettes a day. For informa-
