Mr. Leibowitz's fame as a philosopher, scientist and reli- gious sage extended far and wide, mostly because of his vo- cal opposition to Israel's ad- ministration of the territories it acquired during the 1967 Six- Day War. Controversial in his outspo- ken beliefs, Mr. Leibowitz last year turned down the presti- gious Israel Prize awarded him for his life's work, after remarks he made ignited controversy and drew condemnation in the Knesset. Mr. Leibowitz had been rec- ommended for the prize by a government-appointed com- mittee.
