Nationally, other chapters of
the AJCommittee have complet-
ed similar surveys.
In Cleveland, results showed
that half of the 18 temples and
synagogues responding to the
survey accept intermarried cou-
ples as members. Six accept only
the Jewish partner, and three —
all Orthodox — will not offer
membership to interfaith couples.
In Denver, the organization
has distributed more than 400
copies of the 64-page study it pub-
lished two years ago.
The information goes to cou-
ples seeking counseling, new
mothers, parents of children at
the Jewish Community Center
pre-school and members of in-
terfaith family groups similar to
Detroit's Stepping Stones.
"Interfaith couples very often
do not approach congregations
for fear of being rejected," said

Anita Fricklas, executive direc-
tor of the Colorado AJCommit-
tee.
Ms. Fricklas said the study has
directed these couples toward
congregations likely to accept and
accommodate them.

did not have policies," she said.
In the process of filling out the
questionnaires, Detroit congre-
gations also were spurred to de-
fine their policies. Ms. Green
discovered that many congrega-
tions are developing policies of
their own.
"This is not the last word,"
she said. "It's a place to start
from." ❑
