New York (JTA) — "This Rosh
Hashanah Pray In The Original."
So proposes an advertisement
that can now be seen throughout
the New York City subway sys-
tem and heard over the radio, in
an attempt to attract Jews to a
quarterly crash course in He-
brew.
For the seventh year, thou-
sands of Jews who never knew
Hebrew will be able to read the
Rosh Hashanah prayers in their
original language because of a
course offered by the National
Jewish Outreach Program.
Participants in the Hebrew
Reading Crash Course, which is
free and offered in hundreds of
synagogues and Jewish commu-
nity centers across North Amer-
ica, learn to read Hebrew in five
lessons lasting an hour and a half
each. Each student receives a free
textbook.
The basic course is aimed only
at teaching Hebrew reading skills
without understanding th•
'
meaning. But a second-level clAss
is available to learn somesram-
mar and word meaning.
Since the basic reg course
began seven yea ago, 65,000

brew, the
35,000 ha-,' unproved their read-
ing s kip ay moving on to the sec-

yea later.
file program, which is inde-
pendent of any other Jewish or-
ganizations, also provides a
Crash Course in Basic Judaism,
which teaches fundamentals of
religious observance. "It covers
belief in God, prayer, Jewish ob-
servance and sexuality," said Re-
becca Freund, director of both
public relations and young lead-
ership for the Outreach Program.
In addition to the class offered
before Rosh Hashanah, the He-
brew-reading crash courses are
given before Chanukah, Pesach
and Shavuot.
"We have had a tremendous
response since we began doing
the subway and radio advertis-
ing," said Ms. Freund. "In the
past two weeks, we have regis-
tered about 1,000 people across
the country, and it is still going
on," she said.

New Envoy
Is Survivor

Budapest (JTA) — Israel's new
ambassador to Hungary, Joel
Alon, is returning here after leav-
ing Hungary in 1949 with his
family, all of whom survived the
Holocaust.
"It's a great satisfaction that af-
ter 45 years I can return to Hun-
gary as ambassador representing
Israel," Mr. Alon said. tele-
