The West Bloomfield Township
Planning Commission on Tues-
day refused to endorse a
$450,000 addition to Congrega-
tion Bais Chabad of West Bloom-
field.
The commission voted 5-3 to
recommend that the township
board not approve the addition.
The congregation, located on
Maple Road east of Orchard
Lake Road for 13 years, is seek-
ing to double the size of its build-
ing and parking lot. It has
purchased a lot south of its pre-
sent site which would allow it to
expand the parking lot to 69
spaces and add 40-50 feet to the
basement and main floor.
The project would add 100
seats to the 129-seat sanctuary,
provide larger offices and a dai-
ly chapel, expand the basement's
social hall and kitchen and add
a library, youth lounge and bath-
room facilities.
The proposal is not expected
to be heard by the township
board until the end of Septem-
ber.
The planning commission
heard complaints about traffic
and parking in the neighbor-
hood. Lubavitch supporters ar-
gued that their plans addressed
those issues. They also worked
with residents on landscaping
concerns.
Their plan was supported by
the township's planning depart-
ment.
On a separate issue, the plan-
ning commission voted to tour
the site of the proposed Syna-
gogue Campus of Living Ju-
daism west of the Jewish
Community Center. The tour
will help settle wetlands issues
for the sponsoring Lubavitch
Foundation, which is seeking
preliminary site plan approval.
