There is a memorial

of the Wiesbaden
Jews who perished
in the Holocaust.

"I usually say that each person
or family has their own particu-
lar reason," said Ms. Pringsheim.
In her case, her mother is Aus-
trian; her father is German; and
even though the family escaped
to England during the war, af-
terwards her father wanted to re-
turn. "He wanted to come back
and help build a democracy," said
Ms. Pringsheim.
Despite the questions from out-
siders, she sees a positive side to
living in Germany as a Jew.
"I feel there's a greater sensi-
tivity to the history of Jews and
to the Jewish situation than in
other places — for example, Eng-
land," she said.
"In England, the attitude is,
`You're Jewish — so wha?t' But
in Germany, there's a special sen-
sitivity and a lot of interest. For
instance, many German students
come to see the synagogue with
their teacher. There's quite an
earnest interest in Judaism, and
I feel that is very positive."
She feels very positive about
working for the Jewish commu-
nity of Wiesbaden.
"I enjoy the diversity of this
community," she said. "And I es-
pecially enjoy working with peo-
ple who are my parents' and
grandparents' generation. The
Jewish community is a place
where they have contact with
other Jews. Helping to make that
possible is very satisfying." El

column from the main synagogue

) struction. There's also a memorial
plaque in honor of the Wiesbaden
Jews who perished in the Holo-
caust.
Out in the bright sunshine,
there is also ample evidence of a
live community — the modern
synagogue, the social hall with
its own kosher kitchen, the ad-
ministration building with class-
rooms where 40 youngsters come
twice a week and on Sundays for
Jewish education.
"A big focus is the religious
school for our young people," said
Ms. Pringsheim. "Our challenge
is bringing our tradition to the
next generation."
Last year, there were four bar
mitzvahs, three of them of Russ-
ian Jews who had no experience
with Judaism in their own coun-
try.
They often express surprise to
find a synagogue — and an active
Jewish community in a German
spa town. Of course, some visi-
tors inevitably wonder why Jews
would live in Germany.
