NOW IN WIDE WIDTHS FOR BACK-TO-SCHOOL

Mr. Beskin also recalls a peri-
od in the 1980s when his insti-
tute in Moscow had world-
standard equipment, but with a
peculiar twist. Every request for
equipment had to be processed
by a mammoth bureaucracy,
which took about a year. By the
time the equipment arrived, it
was often no longer needed. The
scientists would take it anyway
and try to exchange it with col-
leagues for equipment or mate-
rials they needed at that
moment. This created a barter
system that consumed a large
part of the scientists' time.
While Mr. Beskin, Dr. Kotler
and Dr. Sobolev are working on
the lab's main project, the speed-
ed-up decoding of genes, the fifth
member of Dr. Ulanovsky's team.
Dr. Dina Zevin-Sonkin, is ex-
ploring different ground. She is
trying to develop a method for ob-
serving genes via a fluorescent
microscope with a resolution hun-
dreds of times greater than is
presently possible. If the project
is successful, it should enor-
mously facilitate the mapping of
genes on chromosomes.
Dr. Zevin-Sonkin, who immi-
grated here from Kiev in 1972
and pursued her Ph.D. studies in
molecular biology at the Weiz-
mann Institute's Feinberg Grad-
uate School, headed a molecular
biology project at Bar Ilan Uni-
versity for four years before re-
turning to Weizmann.
When she and Dr. Ulanovsky
were studying at Feinberg, there
were about two dozen students
from Russia. Now there are al-
most five times that number.
There is every reason to be-
lieve that these students — like
Dr. Zevin-Sonkin and Dr.
Ulanovsky — will one day make
major contributions to Weizmann
Institute research.
