Selichot Service

For the third year, the Religious
Committee of the Grosse Pointe
Jewish Council is sponsoring Re-
form high holiday services for the
Jewish community on Detroit's
east side.
Rosh Hashanah services will
begin at 8 p.m. on Sept. 5, and
resume at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 6 with
a children's service from 1:30 to
2 p.m. Yom Kippur will conclude
with a memorial service at 3 p.m.
Rabbi Joseph Gutmann will
conduct the services. He has
served as rabbi at Temple Beth-
El in Birmingham and Congre-
gation Solel in Brighton. The
observances are held under the
auspices of the Religious Com-
mittee of the Grosse Pointe Jew-
ish Council. The council's
objective is to preserve and pro-
mote the heritage and traditions
of the Jewish religion and culture
for the benefit of its membership
and the community of metropol-
itan Detroit's east side, and to of-
fer an educational and social
forum for its members.

Members of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek and Shaarey
Zedek B'nai Israel Center who
serve as ushers for the high hol-
idays and throughout the year
will be honored at an evening of
celebration to be held prior to the
traditional Selichot service 9:30
p.m. Aug. 27 at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek.
Music will be presented by the
Oak Street Winds under the di-
rection of Ed Benyas. Mr. Benyas
leads his trio in performing
Klezmer and other Jewish in-
strumental music, as well as mu-
sic from the classical repertoire. A
variety of desserts will be served.
Following the program, the
traditional Selichot service will
be held at 11:30 p.m. Members of
the congregation will participate
in readings during the service.
Admission is free, but reserva-
tions are necessary. For reserva-

At Adat Shalom
The Adat Shalom Synagogue Adult
Study Commission has planned a
Selichot program with Rabbi
Daniel Nevins and traditional late
night Selichot services featuring
the Oakland Chamber Players and
the Mat Shalom Mixed High Holy
Day Choir on Aug. 27.
Following a 9:30 p.m. coffee re-
ception, Rabbi Nevins will speak
on "Does God Need Atonement?"
At 11 p.m., the service will begin
with a musical introduction by the
Oakland Chamber Players. The
quartet was formed in 1988 for the
purpose of exploring music for oboe
and strings and performs its wide
and varied repertoire throughout
the Detroit area.
Rabbis Efry Spectre and
Daniel Nevins and Cantor
Howard Glantz will officiate.
The evening is open to the com-
munity. There is no charge.
Reservations are not required.
