They gave up Charles Kuralt before he retired. Trusted their own movie judgement, not Siskell and Ebert. Realized politics and politicians are boring. And finally decided they owed their children a Jewish education. These are the families, not all of them our congregants either, who enrolled themselves in Congregation Shir Tikvah's unique family religious education program. Now this is not the traditional Sunday School, this is an educational program that just happens to be held every Sunday morning at Roeper School on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills. It's not the Sunday school you may remember—your Mother or Father dropped you off and then picked you up. This is family time. Where a parent or the parents and their child or children are part of the education process. Where you share their learning experience as they absorb Jewish history, culture, heritage and religion. And where they learn from your experience. It could only help shape the rest of their lives. Skeptical, huh? Okay. Put us to the test. Experience family education at Shir Tikvah. Bring the kids Sunday, September 11 or another Sunday and look us over. There's no charge, and you may get a charge out of seeing your kids learn something they can use for the rest of their lives. The Avodah Dance Ensemble is the creation of its artistic di- rector, JoAnne Tucker. A pioneer in the development of public school dance programs, Ms. Tuck- er received her training at the Juilliard School and the Martha Graham Studio. Ms. Tucker's works retell biblical stories and dramatize children's Holocaust poems and medieval Hebrew po- etry. She has also explored the struggle for freedom shared by Jews and blacks in Let My Peo- ple Go, a work based on the poem of the same name by James Wel- don Johnson. Both the Avodah dance per- formance and Selichot service are open to the community. An 8:15 p.m. dessert reception will pre- cede the evening's events. The re- ception, performance and service are sponsored by the Married Group of Temple Beth El and un- derwritten by the Stein Family. For information, contact Bar- bara Grant, 851-1100. RABBI LEO Y.
