WHAT IS P'TACH?

at

plan ahead and stay in touch
thrive after school. Here's how to
be an engaged parent even when
you're away from home:
• Plan after-school activities.
Ideally, your child won't have to
go home to an empty house. Com-
munity centers, church groups,
after-school sports and clubs can
keep kids occupied at least a few
afternoons a week. For older kids,
an after-school job also brings in
welcome cash.
• Establish ground rules.
Work with your child to structure
her time home alone. Tell her if
any appliances are off limits
when you're not home, how much
television she can watch, how
much homework she should get
done and any chores that are her
responsibility.
You can encourage children to
do homework and/or chores by
pointing out the advantages. The
more they get done before you get
home, the more time the two of
you will have to spend together.
• Maintain contact. You may
not be home, but your presence
should be felt. Have your child

call you at work as soon as lie gets
. home. And he should feel com-
fortable calling you with any
questions or concerns.
• Safety counts. Your child
should understand the impor-
tance of keeping the door locked
and using the telephone answer-
ing machine to screen phone
calls. Under no circumstances
should she answer the door to a
stranger or tell someone on the
phone that she is alone.
• Establish a network of
helpers. The child should know
your immediate neighbors. Alto,
you might have a trusted neigh-
bor or grandparent call or stop by
to check on the child. A child
should have someone close by to
call if he gets scared or lonely.
• In case of emergency. Make
sure your child knows how to dial
911. It's also smart for older kids
to be acquainted with rudimen-
tary first-aid techniques. Ifa teen-
ager is going to spend a lot of time
baby-sitting younger siblings,
consider enrolling him or her in
a CPR class at the local YMCA or
community center.
• Don't leave children alone too
soon. When is it OK to leave a
child alone? That depends on the
child. Some 10-year-olds are ma-
ture enough to understand the
responsibilities of being on their
own for a few hours. Some 13-
year-olds still need adult super-
vision.
You're probably the best judge
of your child's level of maturity and
confidence. When in doubt, err on
the side of caution and arrange for
continued supervision.

Parents for Torah for All Children.
"P'TACH," is a national non-profit
organization which provides secular and
Jewish education for children with learning
disabilities who are enrolled in our schools.
Before P'TACH existed, the doors of
almost all day schools were indeed closed
to children with all levels of learning
disabilities, and the parents of these special
children were often frustrated by a
community that failed to recognize the need
for providing special educational programs
in our schools. Now, through P'TACH, the ,
doors of our schools are "OPEN" to all
our children.

The Michigan branch, P'TACH of
Michigan, Inc., was founded in May of
1979 by a group of parents, lay people and
professionals in fields related to special
education. Our main objective is to provide
special education for learning disabled
children with the goal of mainstreaming
them into regular classrooms whenever
possible. Today, P'TACH has grown to
serve over twenty children in its two
programs. Unfortunately, due to a lack of
financial resources, children are currently
on a waiting list to enter P'TACH's
programs.
