TOP TEN REASONS FOR JOINING CONGREGATION SHIR TIKVAH CAJE Educates The Educators JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER Rick Goren is convinced the schedule book of workshops of- fered at the Coalition for the Ad- vancement of Jewish Education (CAJE) is larger than the Bloom- ington, Ind., phone book. Mr. Goren, director of youth and high school activities at Temple Israel, has accepted the fact that he simply cannot attend all of the sessions that interest him. "There are so many classes you want to be able to take," Mr. Goren said. "I found four I want- ed to go to, but they were all at the same time. You just have to find the ones that you feel will be most valuable to you and your students." With the common goal of edu- cating Jewish minds, thousands of educators — including more than 80 from the Detroit area — arrived this week in Indiana for the 19th annual CAJE confer- ence. During the day, educators par- ticipated in discussions on any imaginable topic in Jewish ed- ucation. Nights were devoted to Jewish entertainment. Achi- noam Nini and Gil Dor and pi- anist David Syme, son of Temple Israel Rabbi M. Robert Syme, were some of the entertainers. Martin Wolin, a Temple Emanu-El teacher, said the con- ference proved false the old say- ing "there's nothing new under the sun." 'The truth is we're find- ing new and invigorating things here," he said. Mr. Wolin, who attended a session titled "The Israel Na- tional Anthem: Tools for Discussing Israel-Diaspora Re- lations," said, "I've always been inspired by 'Hatikvah.' I fre- quently ask my students to rise and sing it. By they end of the year, they know every word." During this session on "Hatik- vah," the contents of various na- tional anthems were compared. `The anthems of many countries are steeped in war. Israel's is steeped in peace," Mr. Wolin said. Detroiters also were among the presenters at CAJE. The Agency for Jewish Edu- cation's Harlene Appelman led a three-part workshop on the "Art and Craft of Family Educa- tion." Sue Stettner, director of Jew- ish Experiences for Families (JEFF), was also a presenter. One of her sessions was devoted to teaching a new, three-part family program addressing HIV and AIDS.
