small sailboats, a small school bus
and a mini-van.
"The mini-van was in reason-
ably good condition, so we kept
it," Ms. Lutz said. It is the only
vehicle the agency retained.
JARC uses it for its maintenance
department. The agency operates
17 group homes, housing 90
clients, and serves a total of 250
in its homes, on its waiting lists
and its independent living pro-
gram.
The auto donation program
represents a small portion of
JARC's $4 million annual budget.
"But every little bit helps," Ms.
Lutz said, "and it doesn't take
that much of my time for the re-
turn the agency gets."
Ms. Lutz is administrative as-
sistant at JARC. She averages 15
informational calls a week about
donating automobiles. She said
the program has been more suc-
cessful than expected with a
steady one or two donations a
week, "and sometimes as many
as four or five."
JARC provides a form to each
donor for tax purposes, but the
donor is responsible for deter-
mining the value of the vehicle.
Most donors hear about the pro-
gram through a JARC advertise-
. ment in The Jewish News or from
announcements in the JARC
newsletter.
Most of the automobiles are 9-
10 years old or older and often in
poor condition. Ms. Lutz asks the
owners to bring the cars to the
JARC office if they are drivable.
The wholesalers will tow inoper-
able vehicles from the owner's
home.
The wholesalers make an offer
to Ms. Lutz, and then re-sell the
cars to dealers or for scrap. For
the "junkers," JARC gets $50 to
several hundred dollars. Only oc-
casionally will a $1,500-$2,000
car be donated.
"We've had calls from people
who want us to tow a junker from
their location," Ms. Lutz said.
"But they may not have title to
the vehicle" which someone may
have abandoned in front of their
business.
Ms. Lutz requires donors of in-
operable vehicles to send her the
signed title before she sends out
the wholesalers.
JARC is thinking about doing
more advertising for its auto do-
nation program. But the agency
doesn't plan on following Moth-
er Waddles into the used-car
market.
"People call and want to buy
cars from us, but we're not in
that business," Ms. Lutz said.
"We've even joked about placing
colored flags around the office
parking lot. We're just not sure
the landlord would approve." ❑
