"My family learned about the Heatherwood life-style... and now I'm living it!" The community's young rabbi, only three months in office, also comes from a Moroccan fam- ily, but studied at a Chabad yeshiva in Brooklyn. His all-black dress code reflects this experi- ence and his congregants have jocularly lengthened his name from "ElFassi" to "ElFassinsky." Although almost microscopic compared to that of Baltimore — not to mention New York or Los Angeles — Barcelona Jewry has a remarkably active religious, social, cultural and ath- letic life. Like Jewish enclaves of simi- lar size, from Bombay to Salt Lake City, the Comunidad Is- raelita de Barcelona proves that it takes a small critical mass to establish a viable, even vibrant, Jewish communal existence. AND TOUR SOUTHFIELD'S FINEST RETIREMENT COMMUNITY (810) 350-1777 the Traces of the old Jewish community of the Middle Ages are found mainly at two sites. One is the name of the city's landmark Montjuic, or Jews' Mountain, which was the main site for the 1992 Olympic Games. More insistent reminders are found in the names of the narrow, winding roads and his- torical markers of the city's Call, or old Jewish quarter, found in the old Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. About 60 miles northeast of Barcelona lies Girona, hometown of the great 13th-century scholar Nachmanides, and a thriving cen- ter of Jewish life in the Middle Ages. Now bereft of Jews, Girona bears striking reminders of past glories. Much of the medieval Jewish quarter has been restored and many artifacts of the era are on display at the Catalan Museum of Sephardic Culture. The Barcelona Jewish Com- munity publishes a six-page pam- phlet on its past and present. ALso available in English from the Spanish National Tourist offices in the United States is the guide "Viajes por la Espana Judia: A Trip through Jewish Spain." Hadassah Magazine's "The Jew- ish Traveler" has a lively chapter on the history of Barcelona Jew- ry. ❑ . 16ATHERWOOD RETIREMENT COMMUNITY I Barri Swallow, 22800 Civic Center Drive Studio, 1 & 2 bedroom rental apartments apart ents with services and amenities to help you enjoy your retirement 1832.
