n the boardwalk in At-
lantic City, the scene is
typically lively and color-
ful. Against the back-
ground of the gleaming
casino-hotels, tourists stroll the
boards, noshing on ice-cream or
salt water taffy, heading for the
casinos or gazing out at the At-
lantic Ocean, with seagulls
swooping down on the wide,
sandy beach.
The open-air boardwalk tram
cruises along, packed with pas-
sengers who alight at the various
casinos. Soon a float from the
Showboat Casino glides by, with
musicians playing Dixieland mu-
sic. Then, too, there are the
rolling chairs, the entertainers
outside the Ocean One Mall, the
tourists with cameras in hand,
the casino regulars relating their
latest gaming adventures.
This colorful kaleidoscope of
sights and scenes is what makes
the East Coast's gaming capital
unique. Seagulls and slot ma-
chines, tourists and high rollers,
white sand and gaudy architec-
ture - it's all part of Atlantic City's
ambiance.
Also with its own unusual
identity is the International Ho-
tel. Located one block off of the
boardwalk, it is a lucky find for
those seeking a fully kosher ho-
tel.
Indeed, for observant Jews
who enjoy a haimische hotel in
the midst of the Atlantic City ac-
tion, this is the only game in
town. It even has its own syna-
gogue, with daily minyans, and
a kosher dining room with a
mashgiach on the premises.
Because of its location in the
heart of the gaming center, it's
a kosher hotel with a distinctive
ambiance.
For instance, high rollers reg-
ularly arrive to enjoy a kosher
dinner before they get back to the
blackjack and roulette tables.
"If the casinos have high rollers
who are kosher, they send them K
over here and the casinos pick up
the tab," says manager Elanit
Shinar, "We have excellent rap-
port with the casinos, and their
kosher customers are very hap-
py to have a good meal instead of K
a TV-type dinner."
The guests at the Internation-
al Hotel are not only gamblers.
Atlantic City draws record num-
bers of tourists each year, and the
hotel's clientele — which is 60
percent Jewish — is diverse, with
guests from all over the United
States — but also from Canada,
Israel, and South America.
The guests enjoy all the typi-
cal amenities of a full-service 125-
room hotel, complete with
swimming pool and Jacuzzi. But
they can also attend minyans dai- ■
ly at the synagogue, which has
installed nine months ago. They
can enjoy kosher meals in the
Garden Terrace Restaurant,
which offers a varied menu.
On a recent Friday night, the
menu included gefilte fish with
horsradish as an appetizer, and
entree choices of half roast chick-
en, barbequed beef ribs, boiled
beef flanken, braised shoulder of
veal or roast prime rib of beef.
The hotel also has the facilities
to serve large groups for special
occasion dinners, bar mitzvahs
or weddings. It isn't only Jewish
weddings that are held here.
Many Italian and Greek wed-
dings are booked here, too. "The
Italians and Greeks especially
seem to love the kosher food,"
says Ms. Shinar.
Whether it's a wedding or bar
mitzvah, quite often the any-
thing-goes style of Atlantic City
