But they have their downside, too ... Many are so-so operations and either last-resorts or "conve- nience" places for customers. Large keys to goodness are wholesome home cooking, clean- liness, a good menu, low prices for complete meals, and con- cerned attention for the fulfill- ment of all dietary requirements. Family restaurants like Alia's, on Greenfield just north of 11. Mile, celebrating its seventh an- niversary, serve a most impor- tant purpose and have all the necessary tools needed to attain high perches in this significant area of dining. Alia's was opened in June of 1987 by Ed and Dunia Farah, seating 140 at the former Irving's Deli locale. Everything that can be is home-cooked, and fresh fish is brought in daily ... Alia's sells about 100 pounds of white fish and 500 pounds of chicken week- ly. Its biggest seller is chicken kabob, also known as shish tawook, boneless and skinless chicken breast ($6.95) ... Fresh (not frozen) home-made veal cut- lets are cut into fillets and cooked in Alia's kitchen ($6.95) ... 12- ounce fresh broiled whitefish ($6.95) sells almost as fast as the fish can swim ... and Alia's Gre- cian broiled boneless breast of marinated chicken ($6.50) is a big favorite. All entrees at Alia's come with soup or salad, potato, vegetable and bread basket ... Free home- made dessert (Alia's makes its own) on early bird and senior cit- izen dinners was off for just a week and you should have heard customers holler ... It had gotten to be a tradition .. and was back in the time it takes to shake a fork. Alia's cooks its own turkeys, between 16 and 20 a week ... to serve fresh as entrees, sand- wiches or in salads ... No pressed turkey here ... perish the word! . Fresh turkey dinners are $6.50. Breakfast, lunch and dinner areserved seven days, Monday- Thursday 7 am. to 9 p.m, Friday, Saturday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. ... As at other restaurants, lox plates on Sundays are big sellers ... The price at Alia's is one of the lowest around, $7.50, including two bagels, onions, tomatoes, cream cheese ... It isn't just a Sunday top seller ... every day, too. A special section of the break- fast menu has egg whites and Eggbeaters, choice of toast, kaiser roll, pita or bagel ... With onions or hashed browns is just 25 cents more. The decor at Alia's oozes of neat charm ... fish tank, green padded booths, green dividers, hanging plants, mirrored walls with etched glass, decorative col- or photos of fruits, vegetables, foods and abstracts. It is noteworthy that Alia's al- Back in 1973, when Ed had the Landmark restaurant in a build- ing with no name (it's now called Crown Pointe on Greenfield and Lincoln), he came up with two- for-one specials ... and with Ri- alto Cafe was among the first to have them ... There are about 12 two-for-one offers. Couples or singles, makes no difference ... Everyone is treated like kings and queens ... Single diners are made very welcome, as they should be ... For sure, Alia's is not one of those places from where single diners shy away due to an unwelcome air. There are 16 salads on Alia's Ed Farrah of Alia's. ways scores in the 90s when in- spected by the Oakland County Health Department ... The only time this isn't important is when a person stops eating ... Ed was so proud of its cleanliness re- cently, that he volunteered to have Oakland County Health De- partment trainees come for two days and observe his chefs work- ing in the spotless kitchen. Broiled filet of salmon is $7.50 and can also be gotten char- grilled on request ... The baked meat loaf is made fresh daily ($5.75) ... This is meaningful ... Many restaurant owners will say that it is fresh, but take the word of some kitchen experts who tell horror stories of bosses insisting on freezing and re-heating after doctoring it up ... shudder! daily menu ... Best seller is the julienne salad because of its fresh turkey (regular size $4.25; large, enough for two or three people, $6.25.) Soups are made fresh daily ... Chicken noodle and beef barley are standard along with a differ- ent one each day (black bean, minestrone, lemon rice, split pea without ham, navy bean, cream of broccoli, clam chowder, etc.) ... Everything at Alia's is prepared from scratch .. its own sauces, too. The turkey burgers are not just ground turkey molded into patties ... They are actual turkey steak filets, $2.95 (with mush- rooms and grilled onions, $3.95). It's early bird menu, 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., has been expanded to 15 items, all $4.55, including soup
