Howdy, pardners ... Welcome
to one of the most unusual
restaurants this side of daily
horse 'n saddle country ... That
is, different for anybody except
cowfolks.
And it's exciting, too ... Du-
rango Grill on Sherman and
Main in Royal Oak, where cow-
hand super chef Keith Famie
stirs up some mighty fine vittles
in surroundings that have you
dudes out on the ranch in no
time.
It's the former Les Auteurs site
where Keith closed his upscale
restaurant that had opened in
1988 and was somewhat of a cat-
alyst for Royal Oak's emergence
with notoriety into the restaurant
world.
Durango Grill opened August,
1993 seating 200 at tables and
booths inside and 25 outside ...
For his next restaurant to follow
Les Auteurs, Keith selected
something that had never been
done before in this area ... An
honest-to-goodness cowboy-
theme restaurant serving down-
on-the-range cowboy cuisine that
is taking off faster than a jack
rabbit in a wildfire.
Hickory barbequed baby-back
ribs, $14.50 regular,
$16.50 whole slab; pan-fried
trout, $12.50; trout in the bag,
$12.50; cedar plank roasted white
fish with corn-on-the-cob and
fresh vegetable, $12.50; Texas
blend rotisserie chicken, $11.75;
hickory-smoked beef ribs, a big
cowboy favorite, $12.50; 10-ounce
center cut sirloin, $13.75.
And just so the cowboys don't
git thar Mexican neighbors across
Texas-way mad, plus a big han-
kerin' for it themselves, there's
south-of-the-border fare like faji-
tas, $8.75 for one person, $14.75
for two; enchiladas, $7.50; grilled
bbq chicken burrito $8.50; buffa-
lo tacos, $7.50.
Biggest specialty seller at Kei-
th Famie's Durango Grill is "The
Works," rotisserie chicken, hick-
ory-smoked beef brisket, and bbq
baby back ribs, served with veg-
etable and choice of potato,
$15.95.
The decor at Durango Grill is
completely cowboy ... not to be
confused with Southwest ... This
is a true all-American easy-to-un-
derstand restaurant ... no pre-
tentious food ... all down-to-earth
... big on family dining ... big on
kids who have their very own Lit-
tle Buckeroo's menu.
In fact, youngsters of all ages
... adults, too ... just love the sur-
roundings which Keith has made
into somewhat of a cowboy mu-

seum ... a collection of Western
artifacts, movie memorabilia, pic-
tures of cowboy stars John
Wayne, Bill Boyd, James Dean,
Clint Eastwood, live trout in a
tank, miniature train of the Iron
Gauge that presently runs from
Durango to Silverton, Colo. ...
Old Western movies play on the
five TV sets around the restau-
rant and cowboy music wafts
from a CD jukebox.
This is more than a restaurant,
it's something folks should see ...
so very interesting and colorful

There are few better imagina-
tions than that of a fine chef ...
and it shows at Durango Grill,
owned by Keith Famie, one of the
best.
Monday through Saturday is
a Mexican Fiesta lunchtime buf-
fet ... All customers can eat of
these goodies ($6.95) or they may
order from the regular menu.
And folks don't have to be cow-
hands to go to Durango Grill ...
Shucks, they don't even have to
wear cowboy boots ... There's
guys coming there with ties,

Ranch hand Keith Famie.

... A huge realistic imagination
would be most necessary to put
something like Durango Grill to-
gether ... This Keith has always
had, from being named one of the
nation's 10 best chefs by Food &
Wine Magazine in 1989 when Les
Auteurs was going great guns,
and previously the wunderkind
of the restaurant world as exec-
utive chef at Raphael's and Chez
Raphael.
Who else but someone with
Keith's vivid command of im-
agery would put cactus in the
middle of the dining room, hang
dried peppers, have old wood
paneling on the walls, a wooden
floor, peanuts in the shell at all
tables in a cow-poke's on-the-
range cup to use for his or her
java, Indian rugs made by the Za-
pote Indians hanging on walls
and in the center of Durango
Grill's dining room, or a saddled
wooden horse, among other en-
gaging sights.
Buffalo chili is right down Kei-
th's alley ... He's big on healthful
eating ... has written a manual
on it ... According to USDA re-
search, Buffalo meat is lower in
cholesterol, calories and fat than
beef yet higher in protein, iron
and other nutrients.

suits, sport jackets, open sport
shirts, jeans, T-shirts ... and gals
in casual dress, informal garb,
dresses, skirts, pants, jackets.
Keith saunters around greet-
ing people in his cowboy hat,
busses tables and does every-
thing a good ranch host should
`ceptin' maybe loaning out the
pride-and-joy horse he loves to
ride.
Durango Grill is open seven
days, Monday, 11 to 3; Tuesday-
Thursday, 11 to 11; Friday and
Saturday, 11 to 12, and Sunday,
4 to 9.
Everything in the gallery set-
ting is for sale ... mirrors, cowboy
boots, all those Western artifacts
... everything.
It's sure a great spot for kids
... and the adults they bring with
them ... lots of fun and good,
sound grub.
There are also rodeo videos for
folks to see and all tables have ac-
tual brands from branding irons
... Sure, Keith's Durango Grill
has one of those, too.
The chow is what you would
expect from a chef like him ...
and the surroundings bring out
America's wonderful heritage of
cowboy culture.
Give Keith Famie a lot of creel
