THE ENTERTAINMENT EVENT OF THE YEAR BALFOUR 61. Rabin Suspends Modi'in Dig Jerusalem (JTA) — Prime Min- ister Yitzhak Rabin has ordered the suspension of archaeological excavations near the planned city of Modi'in in deference to the sen- sitivities and objections of the haredim, or fervently Orthodox, Jews. His decision was protested by the Israeli Association of Ar- chaeologists, who said it was a ca- pitulation to haredi dictates. Members of the association called it a dangerous precedent. The haredim say the archae- ologists are violating Jewish law by digging up bones. They say the bones are buried in a graveyard dating to the Second Temple pe- riod, Israel Radio reported. The haredim also object to a recent attorney general's ruling defining the bones as an archae- ological find and therefore al- lowing for them to be sent to laboratories before they are turned over to the Religious Af- fairs Ministry. Mr. Rabin said the suspension would stand until an under- standing could be reached with Sephardic Chief Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doran. Mr. Bakshi-Doron reportedly said he would request a permanent end to the Modi'in excavations. Similar protests by haredim took place in Jerusalem against excavations being carried out throughout the country. The pro- testers in the capital tried to block the entrance to the fervently Or- thodox Mea She'arim quarter. Soldier Shot In Hebron Tel Aviv (JTA) — An Israel De- fense Force soldier was lightly wounded when shots were fired at the army minibus in which he was traveling through the He- bron Hills, in the West Bank. The shots were fired from a car which sped by on the road. No other passengers were hurt. Army reinforcements sum- moned to the scene gave chase but the assailants fled into a nearby village. The car used by the gunmen was later found abandoned on the outskirts of Hebron. It had been stolen recently from within the Green Line, Israel's pre-196'7 bor- ders. Medical researcher Dr. Joseph Goldberger (1874- 1929) was regarded as the father of the science of nutri- tion. More than anyone else, he laid the basis for the science, calling for a bal- anced diet for the preserva- tion of health.
