IDF Numbers
On The Rise

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The Israel De-
fense Force this month induct-
ed its highest number of recruits
ever, according to the comman-
der in charge of the IDF's man-
power branch, Maj. Gen. Yoram
Yair.
The actual number of new re-
cruits is not published for secu-
rity reasons.
According to Maj. Gen. Yair, a
full 33 percent of the new recruits
will join combat units, mostly at
their own request.
Maj. Gen. Yair also said the ed-
ucational level of the recruits was
the highest on record, with an un-
precedented 86 percent being
high school graduates.
This represents a sharp con-
trast to a decade ago, when
Rafael Eitan, the former chief of
staff who now serves in the Knes-
set, established supplemental
schooling for recruits, many of
whom were thought to have in-
sufficient education for a modern
army.
Speaking to military corre-
spondents this week, Maj. Gen.
Yair said that of those recruits
volunteering for combat units, a
high percentage wanted to join
the undercover units that are de-
signed to deal with Palestinian
militants in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip.
"We will continue to maintain
those two units, despite the re-
cent agreements with the Pales-
tinians," Maj. Gen. Yair said.
He added that Israel'speace
initiatives will result in a lessen-
ing of the burden on reservists,
but that a decision on shortening
the current three years of com-
pulsory service has not yet been
made.
A special commission set up to
study the reduction of compulso-
ry service has proposed that the
period of compulsory military ser-
vice for men be reduced by four
months.

Davar
Investor?

Tel Aviv (JTA) — New York at-
torney Leon Charney met for four
hours last week with staff mem-
bers of the daily newspaper
Davar to tell them of his interest
in joining them in their planned
buyout of the newspaper from its
current owner, the Histadrut la-
bor federation.
Mr. Charney has confirmed
that he agreed to be a "strategic
partner — on condition that a full
audit is conducted into the pa-
per's financial situation."
He said that he would invest
in the newspaper and advise the
workers, while the journalists
would run and manage it.
