' The sudden death of David Re-
ichmann is a blow to Darcom, the
Israeli telecommunications com-
pany he founded in 1992, but the
firm expects to continue carrying
out his aims, said Darcom CEO
Zvi Amid.
The Tel Aviv-based company
lost a "young man with a highly
developed business sense," Mr.
Amid said after returning from
the Bnai Brak funeral. Mr. Re-
ichmann, 34, died from an ap-
parent heart attack.
Mr. Amid said he did not know
which members of the Reich-
mann family would get involved
in the business. A younger broth-
er has a high-tech firm in Cana-
da, and there are two younger
brothers and a sister.
The company has two other in-
vestors, IDB and Dovrat-Shrem.
Mr. Amid was sure they wanted
the company (which has about
three dozen employees) to con-
tinue functioning and flourishing.
Although Darcom's initial in-
vestment totaled $24 million, its
current value is more than dou-
ble that, Mr. Amid said.

R&D Grant
Requests Soar

Research and development grant
requests shot up 100 percent in
July from the same period last
year, Israel Industry and Trade
Ministry Chief Scientist
Yehoshua Gleitman reported.
Since the beginning of the year,
the ministry's research commit-
tee — headed by Mr. Gleitman —
has approved NIS 790 million in
research and development grants,
a 30 percent increase over the
same period last year.

Elscint Profits
Take A Dive

Israeli firm Elscint reported a 61
percent decrease in second quar-
ter net profits to $2.72 million
from $7.15 million during the
same quarter last year. The com-
pany attributed the decline to a
one-time gain of $3.5 million in
the second quarter last year re-
sulting from the settlement of a
patent suit.
