"It's a chang- ing world. People change jobs more. We want to find new ways to deal with things like adult ed- ucation and retraining for work- ers." She also has met with De- partment of Health and Human Services officials to share some of Israel's expertise in absorbing people from different cultures, a growing problem in this country. Israel has much to offer and much to learn through such ex- changes, she said. Another part of her job in- volves efforts to reinforce busi- ness relationships between the two countries. Recently, she met with officials of the Food and Drug Adminis- tration in an effort to establish common standards for drug test- ing. Ms. Padan is a fifth-generation Jerusalem native. During the War of Independence, she and her entire family were taken pris- oner by Jordanian forces. She has the dubious distinction of being the youngest POW ever taken from Israel. She trained as a nurse, and be- came active in the labor move- ment. Rabbi Will Come To The Rescue ewish political leaders have watched the harsh war of words between the Anti- Defamation League and some key figures in the Evangel- ical Christian community with growing alarm. That battle was triggered by a recent ADL report on the Christian right, and by the furious response of some Evan- gelical leaders, including TV evangelist and former presiden- tial candidate Pat Robertson. But a Chicago rabbi who has made a career out of building bridges to the Evangelical com- munity may be about to defuse the crisis. Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, founder and director of the In- ternational Fellowship of Chris- tians and Jews, is putting the finishing touches on a complex agreement that includes a par- tial retraction and apology by ADL Chairman Abe Foxman and a promise by Evangelical leaders to attend a Jewish-Christian "summit" in Washington. "We've been working very hard behind the scenes," Rabbi Eck- stein said Monday. "We're very hopeful that things can be worked out this week." She also was the first woman to head the Union Section of the La- bor Party. She is a true believer in the la- bor movement — and in the pow- er of that movement to bring together workers in the United States and Israel. That function will take on added importance, she said, as economic change in the Middle East provides a strong founda- tion for the emerging structures of peace. American labor officials like what they see at the Israeli Em- bassy in Washington. "We've been very impressed with her," said Michael Perry, ex- ecutive director of the Jewish La- bor Committee, a group with a long history of working to strengthen the American labor movement. Recently, Ms. Padan addressed a JLC-sponsored gath- ering in California. To quote Mr. Perry, "She brings to her job an intelligence and a keen appreci- ation of the importance and the modus operandi of the American labor movement. And she recog- nizes the importance of close ties with the American labor move- ment, which has been the strongest supporter of Israel out- side the Jewish community." Mr. Foxman agreed that two spe- cific charges in the ADL report — including the assertion that Robertson had failed to condemn former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke — were inaccurate. Those errors, Mr. Foxman said in an interview, have been cor- rected in a second edition of the popular publication, which is now being produced. Mr. Robertson, in turn, thanked the ADL leader for his "gracious letter" and for the cor- rections. As part of the agreement, Rab- bi Eckstein expects that Mr. Fox- man and Mr. Robertson will participate in a Washington meeting in October that will bring together leaders from both com- munities to begin developing a more effective working relation- ship. ❑ Nothing gratifies the mob more than to get a simple name to account for a com- plex phenomenon, and the word "Jew" is always at hand to explain the neverab- sent maladies of the body politic.
