Q: What does "Amen" mean? A: It means, literally, "So be it." Mentioned 30 times in the Bible, "Amen" is used as a re- sponse to hearing a prayer or bracha, blessing (so there's no need to say the word after recit- ing your own prayers). Using "Amen" is a Jewish tra- dition that Christians have adopted. Muslims also — but much more rarely — use the word in public worship. Q: Why is it that some people say "West Bank" and others use "Judea" and "Samaria"? Address . Born in 1903 in Brooklyn, Sidney Frumkin (he later changed it to Franklin) was the first non-Latin to become a prominent bullfighter. He became interested in the sport while living in Mexico City, later studying with world-famous matador Rodol- fo Gaona. In 1929, Franklin made his debut in Spain; that same year, he met hard- drinking, he-man author Ernest Hemingway, for whom the bull-fighting love bell also tolled. The two became good friends, with Hemingway writing in Death in the After- noon that Franklin was "one of the most skillful, graceful and slow manipulators of the cape in his day." Franklin retired from the ring in 1959, and found work as a broadcaster in Mexico City. His autobiography, Bullfight- er from Brooklyn, was pub- lished in 1952. Q: How did Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial and research center in Israel, get its name? A: From the Bible. Isaiah 56:5 states, "Even unto them will give in my house and within my walls a monument and a memorial better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting memorial that shall not be cut off." The phrase, "monument and memorial" in Hebrew is yad vashem.
