Richard Lobenthal: "The charges are
distortions."

gether mainstream conservative
Christians, many of whom are
"great friends of Israel," with
fringe groups, placing suspicion
on many whose only crime is be-
ing serious about their Christian
faith.
(For example, the report notes
that former Sen. Jack Kemp of
New York has attended confer-
ences of the Concerned Women
for America and the Christian
Coalition, both of which are crit-
ically reviewed. A pro-Israel lob-
bying group in Washington
describes Mr. Kemp as "ab-
solutely one of Israel's strongest
supporters.")
Richard Lobenthal, Michigan
Region director of ADL, said the
publication "discusses the reli-
gious right's hostility to plural-
ism and their avowed focus on
mixing church and state," but
that it does not label the religious
right anti-Semitic.
He also denied the Dechter
ad's claim that the book calls for
religious persons not to partici-
pate in the American political
process.
"The charges are distortions,"
he said. "If the signers (of the ad)
read the book, then they are dis-
torting its conclusions.
"The book actually defends the
religious right because of their
support for Israel. They say we
are defamatory, but could not
come up with a single example.
They say we are Christian bash-
ing, but can't come up with a sin-
gle instance."
Miss Dechter is further dis-
turbed by the ADL report's sug-
gestion that everyone opposed to
gay rights and abortion on de-

mand is attacking the entire
foundation of democracy.
"(Holding those views) is not
an assault on pluralism but part
of a debate on very vital issues,"
she said.
The Dechter ad was placed in
conjunction with Toward Tradi-
tion, a Washington state-based
coalition "formed to inject Judeo-
Christian values based on con-
servatism into our culture,
economy and politics."
The head of Toward Tradi-
tion is Rabbi Daniel Lapin (de-
scribed in the ADL report as
"the strident West Coast rab-
bi"), who is slated to appear as
a speaker for the upcoming
Christian Coalition Road to Vic-
tory conference.
Rabbi Lapin, who holds Or-
thodox ordination, said he has
received hundreds of letters
from supporters since the ad ap-
peared. "A lot of Jews are get-
ting tired of hearing that being
conservative is tantamount to
being anti-Semitic."
Christian groups also have
rallied to refute the publication.
"The ADL report is filled
with fabrications, half-truths,
innuendo and guilt by associa-
tion that are reminiscent of the
political style practiced by Joseph (
McCarthy in the 1950s," accord-
ing to the Christian Coalition.
It claims the ADL report con-
tains "numerous factual errors,"
takes words out of context and
makes "reckless charges of anti-
Semitism."
The nonprofit Christian Coali-
tion, which the ADL report labels
"the most influential religious
N
right organization of the 1990s,"
was founded by Pat Robertson to
involve more Christians in the
political arena. Its conferences
have attracted such figures as for-
mer Vice President Dan Quayle
N
and former U.S. Rep. Guy Van-
der Jagt of Michigan.

"Jews are tired of
hearing that being
conservative means
being anti-Semitic."

— Rabbi Daniel Lapin

Meanwhile, a member of the
Michigan ADL board has ex-
cerpted a 20-page pamphlet from
the book, which ADL has offered
free to area congregations for the
High Holidays.
"We've done this because
this (religious tests for morali-
ty) is such a special threat to
Jews as well as a threat to the
separation of church and state,"
Mr. Lobenthal said. Michigan
ADL is prepared to publish
10,000-12,000 copies of the pam-
phlet.
