STEVE STEIN STAFF WRITER W ith college costs sky- rocketing, financial aid is becoming more and more crucial for stu- dents and their families. Jennifer Gruber and Joshua Sukenic will receive some mon- etary assistance from the Michi- gan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. They are the winners of the Hall . of Fame's 1994 High School Ath- letic Scholarship Awards. The 18-year-old June high- school graduates both will enter Michigan State University this fall. Gruber completed her stud- ies at Southfield-Lathrup with a 4.0 grade-point average, while Sukenic finished at West Bloom- field with a 3.25 GPA. Gruber and Sukenic will be honored at the annual Hall of Fame Induction Banquet Nov. 7 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. Scholarship candidates were recommended by their high- school coaches and counselors. The winners were chosen by a panel of mem- bers from the Hall of Fame's board of governors. "I'm real excited. This schol- arship is going to help a lot," said Gruber, who will enter Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State, with future plans of getting into the School of Engineering. "I've worked hard on my aca- demics and athletics, so winning the scholarship means a lot to me," said Sukenic, who will be in James Madison College at Michi- gan State. Sukenic attended Lath- rup as a freshman before transferring to West Bloomfield. He was the starting second baseman on the Lakers' varsity baseball team last spring after being a part-time starter at that position as a ju- nior. Both scholarship winners played for Detroit in the Jewish Community Centers Maccabi Youth Games. Gruber was a member of the girls' soccer team in the North American Games in Baltimore in 1992. Sukenic was on the boys' softball squad in the 1990 North American Games in Detroit and the 1991 Regional Games in Cleveland.
