unusually friendly Jewish fami-
ly, whose members love to so-
cialize with their guests and who
can converse fluently in several
languages.
On the afternoon I visited,
Yocheved Cohen greeted me
warmly, although I was a
stranger, and soon her son Her-
bert and her father-in-law Kurt
Cohen, founder of the restaurant,
had also joined us.
Still full of energy at age 76,
Kurt Cohen comes to the restau-
rant early every morning and
stays until at least 7 p.m. It took
little encouragement to get him
to share the details of how he
founded the only Jewish family-
owned restaurant in Bavaria.
Born in Hamburg, he man-
aged to escape the Nazis and took
refuge in Belgium. "I left Ham-
burg on November 24, 1938, ex-
actly two weeks after
Kristallnacht," he related, refer-
ring to the night when Nazis
burned and destroyed syna-
gogues all over Germany.

This is a restaurant
where everyone can
feel at home.

After his escape, he lived in
Antwerp for 10 years and held
various jobs, including working
on the coal mines and in a glass
factory.
In 1942, he got married. His
wife, a Czech native, had also es-
caped to Belgium. She was an
excellent cook who worked as a
private cook in Antwerp homes.
"And she was known as the best
cook in Belgium," says her hus-
band. But it would be quite a
while before she turned that tal-
ent to a new direction.
The couple stayed in Belgium
until 1948, when they returned
to Germany and settled in Mu-
nich. There, Mr. Cohen worked
for the Jewish Welfare Office in
Bavaria.
Then he took on a new chal-
lenge. A lawyer friend owned a
property with a garden near the
famous art museum, the
Pinokothek. "He thought it
would be a good place for a
restaurant. He said to me, `Take
the place and make it into a cof-
fee house and restaurant,' " re-
lated Mr. Cohen.
That's what Kurt and Marjem
Cohen did. In 1960, they opened
Cafe Pinokothek. In a city full of
restaurants, cafes and beer gar-
dens, this one was different: It
specialized in Jewish cuisine.
"We decided we wanted to
serve traditional Jewish food,"
says Mr. Cohen, noting that af-
ter the liberation of the concen-
tration camps, there were some
300,000 displaced persons living
in Bavaria. "-We felt that people
