other's language comes a greater
bond of intimacy between the two

Coexistence education does not
take place only among Israelis.

ican missions to Israel, where a
pair of Arab and Jewish facilita-
tors takes them off the tourist's
path and into Arab cities and vil-
lages where they can discuss the
issues facing the Arab minority
in Israel.
Working towards coexistence
is not easy, fund officials say.
Militant Jewish and Arab
groups who oppose the peace
process also oppose any forms of

Fund, however, feel that these
groups are in the minority.

model for use in other countries.
After all, they maintain, if Jews
and Arabs can live together in
harmony, anything is possible.
In October, a group of educa-
tors from Northern Ireland will
meet with English Protestants
and Catholics in Israel to discuss
possible reconciliations, accord-
ing to Weiner.
Mr. Slifka even feels that co-
existence education is the new
profession of the 1990s — a
decade he believes will be dedi-
cated to banishing hate with har-
mony and tensions with
tolerance.

Right Accuses
Government

The government is using arrests
and administrative detention of
opposition activists to quell anti-
government protest, say opposi-
tion members. Both Ya'akov
Novick and Rafi Atiya, organiz-
ers of the march around
Jerusalem's Old City on Tisha
B'Av, were called in for ques-
tioning by the Jerusalem police.
According to police, the march did
not have the necessary permits,
and posters inappropriately us-
ing the city emblem were found
on the premises of both Mr.
Atiya's and Mr. Novick's homes.
(Jerusalem's Torah Culture De-
partment had originally given as-
sistance in organizing the march,
but under pressure pulled out.
The posters were then changed.)
The Yesha Council sent a letter
to Police Minister Moshe Shahal
asking him to "stop the wave of
political arrests intended to de-
ter legitimate demonstrations
and protests against the danger-
ous policies of the government."
Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-
Ruby denied that the arrests
have been politically motivated.
