Tel Aviv (JTA) — One day after
Israel and Jordan signed the
Washington Declaration ending
their 46-year state of war, Israeli
authorities announced plans to
build six major highways linking
the two countries.
One of the roads, which will
link Eilat and Aqaba, has already
been proposed in talks among Is-
rael, Jordan and the United
States.
The road, which will be about
a mile long, will cost $1 million
and will run from the area of
Eilot, north of Eilat, due east into
Jordan, Meir Gazit, spokesman
for Israel's Public Works De-
partment, said.
Housing Minister Binyamin
Ben-Eliezer, who has ministeri-
al responsibility for the Public
Works Department, said that he
had given the order for the plan-
ning of the new roads to insure
that when an Israeli-Jordanian
peace is eventually signed, the
roads from Amman to Jerusalem
and Ashdod would be open for
travel.
A second highway will go from
the Nitzana border crossing,
which separates the Negev from

the Sinai peninsula, to the an-
cient Jordanian city of Petra. An-
other route will connect the Gaza
Strip, Beersheba and the Jor-
danian city of Jarash.
In the center of Israel, the
greater Tel Aviv area will be con-
nected with Jerusalem and Am-
man. Another proposed highway
will connect Ashdod with points
due east. And in the north, a road
will go from Haifa to Beit Shean
and on to Irbid in Jordan.
In most cases, the new east-
west roads will be built as exten-
sions to existing highways, which
will have to be widened and have
new interchanges built.
Meanwhile, the Knesset began
deliberations this week regard-
ing construction work on the first
60 miles of what is expected to be
Israel's longest highway — the
190-mile-long Route Six, a north-
south route that will connect Is-
rael with Cairo and the border
with Lebanon.
Work on Route Six has been
accompanied by disagreements
over the issue of compensation to
Israeli farmers, some of whose
property will have to be confis-
cated for the highway's con-
struction.
