Gustav Niebuhr, formerly with
the Washington Post, now with
the New York Times; Jeff Sheler
of U.S. News & World Report;
and Richard Ostling of Time
magazine.
Mr. Niebuhr provided "solid
accounts of major religious
events" and dug "into offbeat ar-
eas," such as changing terminol-
ogy in the church and profiling a
Buddhist monk. Mr. Sheler was
"a careful writer" who provided
"balanced accounts of religious
events and controversies." And
Mr. Ostling was "well-sourced,"
"balanced" and offered "insight-
ful and dispassionate analysis of
spiritual and institutional church
• matters."
Two stars went to Kenneth
Woodward of Newsweek for
"showing maturity and wisdom
in his reporting."
And last place among religion
writers went to Ari Goldman,
whom "Forbes Guide" editors ap-
parently didn't know left the New
York Times last summer to write
books and teach at Columbia
University journalism school. Mr.
Goldman got only 11/2 stars be-
cause his work was "readable,
but often incomplete."

`Sir' Waldheim
Is Bashed

On the same day the Baltimore
Sun buried on page 8A a skimpy
four-paragraph wire service sto-
ry about a papal knighthood be-
ing conferred on former United
Nations secretary general Kurt
Waldheim, the Washington Post
ran an irate column about the
July 6 hush-hush event by
Richard Cohen.
In recent months, Mr. Cohen
has become the lone voice of Jew-
ish-related issues on the Post's
op-ed page — especially after
several no-nonsense columns he
wrote attacking Louis Far-
rakhan's anti-Semitism and the
NAACP for inviting him to its re-
cent black summit in Baltimore.
Mr. Cohen compared the way
the Vatican made Mr. Waldheim
a Knight of the Odine Piano to
John F. Kennedy's crack when
asked how he would announce
that he had picked his brother to
be attorney general. The new
president said he would open the
door at 2 p.m. and whisper, "It's
Bobby."
"In somewhat the same man-
ner and with the implied con-
cession that something
outrageous has been done, Pope
John Paul II had Kurt Waldheim
report to the Vatican Embassy in
Vienna to [be knighted] ... It was
as if the pope wanted to have it
both ways — honor Waldheim
and yet not harm his historic ef-
forts to improve Vatican-Jewish
relations.
