MIDRASHA page 16
Historically, the month of
Elul, the four weeks prior to
Rosh Hashanah, is set aside as
a time to reflect, study and pre-
pare for the holy days ahead.
Midrasha offered four one-
evening classes and a three-part
mini-seminar last year. Re-
sponse and instructors' inabili-
ty to wrap up questioning led
Midrasha director Nancy Kaplan
to expand the series.
Each class begins at 8 p.m. at
the Agency for Jewish Education
building in Southfield and is free.
The series kicks off Aug. 8.
"There's a lot of ideas, a lot of
teachers and response has been
so positive. By offering some-
thing almost every week night,
\ we're giving people more choic-
es of topics, more diversified lev-
els of learning and more
opportunities to get in," Ms. Ka-
plan said.
Ms. Kaplan expects programs
like Cantor Gail Hirschenfang's
"Musical Highlights of the Days
of Awe" will draw large audi-
ences. Participants need no
background.
Others, like "Jewish Prayer"
by Akiva Hebrew Day School
teacher Edward Codish, will be
taught in Hebrew and demand
more advanced Jewish knowl-
edge.
In addition, the program is a
vehicle to introduce new leaders
to the community, such as Adat
Shalom Synagogue's Assistant
Rabbi Daniel Nevins and Tern-
ple Kol Ami's summer Student
Rabbi Rick Steinberg.
Ruth Bergman, director of the
Michigan Region United Syna-
gogue of Conservative Judaism,
is using her Aug. 31 date and
program "Purim and Yom Kip-
pur: Some Surprising Connec-
tions," as a springboard to
introduce a series of classes on
\4he Book of Esther. The series
offered later this year is spon-
sored by the Midrasha and the
Shaarey Zedek BI\Tai Israel Par-
enting Center.
Ms. Bergman will focus on dif-
ferences between holidays like
fast versus feast, modest dress
and no shoes versus costume, gift
giving versus sacrifice. Yet both
Yom Kippur and Purim are
about drawing lots, fighting en-
(3emies — within and without, she
said.
"I think studying together dif-
ferent aspects of the holiday is
helpful to enter the mindframe
needed for the high holidays.
You can't just plunge into prayer
and introspection," Ms. Bergman
said. "It's easier to pray when we
\ need something. But when we
are told to pray, to ask for for-
giveness, it is harder to do with
the same havanah (right inten-
tion). We all need a little help
with it." El
