Berris, 77, the 1983 Michigan Mother of the Year, died July 29. Born in Mt. Clemens, she graduated from Wayne State University College of Education. When the newly created Hil- lel Day School had its first third grade class, she was asked to teach the class and remained at the school for 22 years until her retirement. During her time at the school, she was active on be- half of the teachers as a repre- sentative of the union and as a part of the teacher-parent orga- nization, which she served as its president for a term. "Bessie was a truly beautiful human — a top teacher who gave of herself to- tally to her family, students and colleagues. I marvelled at her energy and love," said Rochelle Iskovitz, principal of Hillel Day School. Mrs. Berris was an officer, board member and/or president of a number of local Jewish or- ganizations including the Labor Zionist Organization, Labor Zionist Alliance, Histadrut, Far- band and Na'amat (Pioneer Women). After her retirement, she was elected president of Na'amat, served on the board on Nation- al Na'amat and as president of her local chapter. She was active in Adat Shalom Synagogue, Michigan's Mothers Association and the RACHEL BRICKNER, 64, of West Bloomfield, died July 27. She is survived by her husband, Sidney; sons and daughters-in- law, Neal, Howard and Wendy of Southfield, Robert of Brooklyn, N.Y.; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn and Paul Finkel of West Bloomfield, Gael and Andrew Perlin of West Bloomfield; broth- ers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Elsie Freedman of Livonia, Walter and Elaine Freedman of New York, N.Y.; sister, Ruth Goldberg of Las Vegas, Nev.; three granddaughters.
