Troy Library
Plans D isplays
Gerald Mulka is the artist of the
month at the Troy Public Library
exhibiting his works of woodcut
artistry through July 30. Mr.
Mulka started exhibiting in 1979
and the 18 pieces of art displayed
at the library cover a decade of
work from 1984 to 1994.
To work in this technique he
draws a composition on a block
of wood; then using knives and
chisels he removes the wood sur-
face between the drawn lines.
The raised surfaces which remain
after the cutting are then inked
and pressed against paper re-
sulting in the desired print.
Capturing people in various
phases of work and play is a fas-
cination of Troy woodcarver Ray
Ottjepica. A display of his work
runs through July 29 at the Troy
Public Library.
The woodcarvings cover the
gamut of the American experi-
ence from the hunter in the
woods to the Civil War era. Mr.
Ottjepica's carvings display the
jazz musician entertaining, the
fisherman's catch of the day, the
town sheriff protecting his ter-
ritory and the Native American
warrior. Mr. Ottjepica displays
13 pieces of art which highlight
the lifestyles of early Americans
'engaged in war and daily chores.
During July at the Troy Pub-
lic Library, the Detroit Puppet
Guild will display a collection of
puppets by its vice-president
3lect, the late Michael Joly.
