Jews Listed
As Threats

Moscow (JTA) —About 300 Mus-
covites recently turned up for
what was billed as a "creative
evening" organized by the ultra-
nationalist and anti-Semitic
newspaper, Black Hundred.
The gathering was held to
commemorate the 53rd anniver-
sary of the outbreak of the Great
Patriotic War, to raise funds for
the newspaper and to discuss var-
ious so-called "threats to Russia."
The society's leader, Alexan-
der Shtilmark, said, "Efforts are
being made all the time to feed
us various forms of Masonic phi-
losophy, even though they call
it Russian.
That way we'll keep electing
sexual perverts or Shalom ac-
tivists to the presidency."
Mr. Shtilmark was referring
to the society of Freemasons and
a Jewish club named Shalom.
Jews and Freemasons have long
been claimed by racist groups to
be participants in an alleged con-
spiracy to take over the world.
Ironically, the Shalom Club
has had ties to the Soviet gov-
ernment, and Vladimir Zhiri-
novsky, Russia's archpatriot, was
a member of the Shalom Club in
the late 1980s.
Still, Mr. Shtilmark's state-
ment echoed those of many oth-
er extreme right-wingers here. A
common rant at opposition ral-
lies is that President Boris
Yeltsin and other government
leaders are Jewish but they have
changed their names to hide their
origins.
The society of the Black Hun-
dred dates back to the turn of the
century, when it was directly con-
nected with anti-Semitism and
pogroms.
According to historians, Czar
Nicholas II and his wife Alexan-
dra were known to sympathize
with the Black Hundred and fi-
nance its activities.

Swiss Children
Give Aid

Geneva (JTA) — A group of
schoolchildren have volunteered
to help clean up a Zurich ceme-
tery that was the target of van-
dalism last month.
Two 11-year-old boys confessed
earlier this month to the June 17
desecration of more than 100
gravestones at Switzerland's old-
est Jewish cemetery. It was the
second or perhaps third recent
vandalism of the site.
Interviewed on Swiss televi-
sion last week, the children, ages
11 to 18, explained that their vol-
unteer effort was a way of show-
ing their solidarity with the Jews
and of registering their disap-
proval of racist acts.
Repairs to the cemetery, which
was opened in 1862, were ex-
pected to cost some $30,000.
