Italy Formally Asks To Get Extradition Rome (JTA) — Italy's justice min- ister, Alfredo Biondi, has signed the formal extradition request for former Nazi SS captain Erich Priebke, who was tracked down in Argentina last month. A Justice Ministry statement said Mr. Biondi will send the re- quest to the Argentine govern- ment. The statement said copious documentation had already been sent to Argentina demonstrating, among other things, that Mr. Priebke's wartime deeds could be described as crimes against hu- manity. Mr. Priebke was involved in the March 1944 massacre at the Ardeatine Caves, south of Rome. Representatives of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, whose un- dercover agent located Mr. Priebke living openly in an Ar- gentine resort in the Andes Mountains, met last week with Mr. Biondi and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The representatives turned over to the Italians a thick file of papers documenting Priebke's participation in war crimes in- cluding the 1944 execution of 335 Romans — among them 75 Jews — in reprisal for a partisan at- tack that killed 33 Nazi storm troopers. The Italians began extradition proceedings last month, and had 45 days in which to supply full documentation supporting their case. U American Heart Association WERE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE New York (JTA) — The shocking statistic that one in five Ameri- cans believes the Holocaust may not have occurred has been retested, and officially refuted in a new poll. A new survey commissioned by the American Jewish Com- mittee and conducted by Roper Starch Worldwide Inc. found that just over 1 percent of Americans deny that the Holocaust occurred, contradicting the group's disput- ed 1992 poll which had put denial at more than 20 percent. The new survey, released July 6, also found a strong correlation between denial of the Holocaust and knowledge of basic facts about it. Many of those who ques- tioned or denied that the Holo- caust occurred cited lack of information as the reason for their uncertainty, or displayed ig- norance of basic facts about the Holocaust. "Not only are the levels of de- nial low, but few are dedicated, committed deniers. Most of the questioning of the Holocaust re- flects ignorance rather than anti- Semitic commitment," said Tom Smith of the University of Chica- go's National Opinion Research Center, who analyzed the Rop- er poll and other data for AJ- Committee. In the new Roper poll, which was conducted in March, 1.1 per- cent of respondents said it was possible that the Holocaust did not occur, compared with 22 per- cent in the original survey. Eight percent of respondents in the new poll said they were not sure whether the Holocaust hap-
