Land Management
In Israel

Jerusalem (JTA) — In the
process of turning its own deserts
green, Israel has become a world
leader in land and water man-
agement and conservation.
This week, representatives
from 14 countries convened in
Jerusalem to learn how Israel
and other nations are reclaiming
parched, arid land for use in agri-
culture and forestry.
The participants, who hailed
from Egypt, Australia, Mexico,
China, Eritrea and a host of oth-
er countries, attended a three-day
workshop on the management
and development of arid zones.
Sponsored by the Internation-
al Arid Lands Consortium —
comprised of the Jewish Nation-
al Fund, the U.S. Forest Service
and five American universities
— the workshop provided an op-
portunity for experts in land and
water management to share their
expertise and the latest technol-
ogy, and to see first-hand how Is-
rael is rolling back the desert.
Samuel Cohen, executive vice
president of JNF, said the work-
shop "has afforded an opportuni-
ty for Israel to be on the giving
end, and to share expertise with
the rest of the world. It is an ex-
ample of cooperation that has
nothing to do with war or defense.
This is strictly a humanitarian
matter."
About 800 million people in 40
countries face starvation if the
process of desertification is not
reversed, speakers at the confer-
ence said.
In Israel, where 40 percent of
the land is arid or semi- arid, the
JNF has developed ways to lim-
it soil erosion and to increase land
productivity. Thanks to innova-
five irrigation techniques that al-
low plants and trees to grow in
semi-mid land, large parts of the
Negev and other formerly non-
) arable regions are now used for
agriculture and grazing.
While most of the conference
participants said their countries
have already integrated several
Israeli advances in irrigation and
deforestation, they were eager to
7' learn more.
