THE DETROI T JEWISH NEWS
COMING THIS FALL

ewish leaders are hailing a
speech last month by a
local black leader who
strongly condemned black
anti-Semitism.
In a speech before the Strak-
er Bar Association, an orgariiza-
tion of black attorneys, Pontiac
attorney Elbert Hatchett decried
the fact that "black people have
failed to address the problem of
racism among our own."
"Black people have failed to
condemn the ugly racist, anti-Se-
mitic rhetoric of people like (the
Rev. Louis) Farrakhan and oth-
ers who you know are wrong.
Now, if we don't call them wrong,
who will?
"And it was people like those
that Farrakhan has condemned
who stood there on the battle-
fields with us. It was people like
those people that Farrakhan con-
demned who contributed money.
It was lawyers like those people
that Farrakhan condemned who
went to court on our side, side-
by-side, and fought night and day
and studied night and day in or-
der that you could be free.
"And these people did this af-
ter having endured one of the
worst evidences of man's inhu-
manity to man within 50 years."
Mr. Hatched, a prominent civ-
il rights activist, then asked: "So
how could it be that we should
turn upon them? I mean how can
they now become the enemy?"
Mr. Hatchett concluded by
saying: "Black people, I say to
you today, it is time that you
stand again and stand for what
is right. I say to you and I urge
you to tell your children to listen
critically and not to be misled.
"I urge you to tell your children
that freedom is not free. The re-
sponsibility for it is vigilance. The
responsibility for it is a commit-
ment to do what is right. The re-
sponsibility that they will carry
forth is a responsibility to con-
demn racism wherever it rears
its ugly head and by whomever
it may be espoused."
Mr. Hatchett said when he re-
flects on the lack of criticism from
blacks regarding anti-Semitism,
"It hurts."
"And it hurts because not only
are they being misled but it hurts
because people who are in a po-
sition to challenge that have
failed to do it."
He recounted having
"marched, having fought, having
demonstrated, having done all
those things that people who

a reality."
Allen Zemmol, president of the
Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit, said he
was heartened by Mr. Hatchett's
statement. "It is important and
necessary that a person of his
stature make clear that freedom
is not free and that racism by
anyone is wrong," he said.
Richard H. Lobenthal, of the
Anti-Defamation League, said
anti-Semitism by many in the
black community has "certainly
poisoned the well of cooperation"
between blacks and Jews and
strained those relationships.
"In the end, the black commu-
nity loses its moral credibility
and risks its own isolation," Mr.
Lobenthal said. "But Hatchett
points to the even greater folly,
the misleading — some call it
miseducation — of black chil-
dren. In the end, the misled suf-

benefits are on the backs of the
next generation."
The office of the Rev. Wendell
Anthony, president of the local
NAACP chapter, said the Rev.
Anthony would not have any
comment on Mr. Hatchett's re-
marks.
Dr. Arthur Johnson, former
president of the Detroit NAACP
said, "It is not true that blacks
have not spoken out on anti-
Semitism and that does not seem
to register with Jewish leader-
ship."
"The continued criticism and
pressure by Jewish leaders and
the sharp responses by some
black leaders only exacerbates
the sense of tension in black-Jew-
ish relations.
"The fact that Mr. Hatchett
makes this statement about the
lack of responsiveness from the
black community does not make
it any more acceptable."
