ith a few days to go be-
fore Tuesday's primary
election, Anita Hayman
of West Bloomfield is
trying to decide who will get her
vote.
She's still studying the candi-
dates and their issues, trying to
gather enough information so she
is informed when she goes to the
polls.
On Tuesday, Mrs. Hayman
and the rest of Michigan will be
asked to vote for candidates ei-
ther in the Republican Party or
the Democratic Party (a ticket
cannot be split). The primaries
will bring Democratic and Re-
publican candidates to the fore-
front for the statewide Senate
and gubernatorial races, as well
as a number of local
elections.
Gov. John En-
gler is unopposed in
his bid for the Re-
publican nomina-
tion. Democrats
vying for his job are Lansing busi-
nessman Larry Owen, state Rep.
and ordained minister Lynn Jon-
dahl, state Sen. Debbie
Stabenow, and former U.S. Rep.
Howard Wolpe.
Crime and education have
been the two main issues in this
race. The Democrats all say they
favor alternative sentencing to
prisons for non-violent offenders
and would like to see all teach-
ers, including home and private,
be certified.
When Sen. Donald Riegle an-
nounced he would not seek re-
election, a group of candidates
jumped into the race. Democrat-
ic candidates are William Brod-
head, Bob Carr, Joel Ferguson,
John Kelly, Lana Pollack and
Carl Marlinga. Republicans are
Spencer Abraham and Ronna
Romney.
As Congress tries to revamp
the health-care system, candi-
dates have plenty of opportuni-
ties to air their views on this
issue. Mr. Brodhead and Ms.
Romney like the present system.
The others said they do not.
All Oakland County residents
will vote on a recently approved
Circuit Court judgeship. Candi-
dates are Thomas Brennan,
Michael Clawson, Marjory Co-
hen, Constance Cumbey, Daniel
C. Devine Sr., Robert Easterly,
Alice Gilbert, Paul Hynes, Bryan
Levy, Marcia Ross and Joseph
Shulman.
Following is a listing of exact-
ly what voters in seven cities and
townships will be asked to decide.
Bloomfield Hills
Running for Congress are Re-

publican incumbent Joe Knol-
lenberg and Democrat Mike
Breshgold.
Candidates for state Senate
are Republican incumbent
Michael Bouchard and Democ-
rats Robert Boyd and Ed Hamil-
ton.
Democrat Joe Patt, a 21-year-
old Yale University student, is
challenging state Rep. John
Jamian.
Dan Devine and Marilynn
Gosling are vying for the Repub-
lican nominations in the race for
county commissioner.
Birmingham
Republican Joe Knollenberg is
running for re-election to Con-
gress. He will be challenged by
Democrat Mike Breshgold in No-
vember.
Michael
Bouchard, a
Republican,
'9
also is seeking
re-election to
his state Sen-
ate seat. Robert Boyd and Ed
Hamilton are vying for the De-
mocratic slot.
Yale University student Joe
Patt, a Democrat, will challenge
Republican incumbent John
Jarnian for the state representa-
tive post in November.

County Commissioner Shelley
Goodman Taub

Candidates for county com-
missioner are Democrat Ronald
Zate and Republican Donald

Farmington Hills
Republican Joe Knollenberg is
seeking re-election in Congress.
He is being challenged by Demo-
crat Mike Breshgold. Both are
uncontested in the primary.
Democrat Vicki Barnett is hop-
ing to oust Republican David
Honigman from his state Senate
