damage may occur in the mean-

While conducting screening
programs in local schools, Dr. Lei-
der often hears teachers and par-
ents complain about children who
don't seem to be listening. In
many cases, the students are
pegged as having Attention

Deficit Disorder, when in reality,
the fluid in their ears prevents
them from grasping what their
instructors are saying.
"You can document their hear-
ing loss," Dr. Leider says.
Dr. Leider's rationale for put-
ting tubes in his young son's ears
is simple. First, 3-year-old Jacob
suffered from persistent fluid
build-up. Second, he's about to en-
ter Temple Beth El's nursery pro-
gram, but had trouble hearing.
And third: "I got a little tired of
the 'Huh, Daddy? What did you

Volunteers
Hospice of Michigan Cancer
Foundation is looking for vol-
unteers to offer support to ter-
minally ill cancer patients and
their families. Volunteers work
with a team of professionals to
provide care for the dying.
Home volunteers provide com-
panionship, friendship and as-
sistance to patients and to
caregivers.
Bereavement volunteers of-
fer support to families experi-
encing the loss of a loved one,
and special needs volunteers
fulfill patients' special requests.

Volunteers are needed for a
study of a new treatment that
may provide relief to those with
an itchy rash caused by infect-
ed hair follicles. The condition,
called folliculitis, is a bacterial
infection of one or more hair
follicles, which occurs most of-
ten on the legs, buttocks or
scalp.
Doctors at the Centre for
Dermatology and Plastic
Surgery are conducting a study
to determine the effectiveness
of a new topical antibiotic
cream to treat the disorder.
Volunteers with 10 or more in-
fected hair follicles are needed
for the study.
They will be paid and will re-
ceive free medical care for their
condition. The study lasts 17
days, during which each par-
ticipant must be available to

come into the office four times.

Young Adults
The Medical Section of Jewish
Federation's Young Adult Di-
vision will sponsor "Terrorism
in the '90s: The Good News and
the Bad," given by Dr. Sabi
Shabtai, specialist on Mideast
affairs and internationally rec-
ognized authority on terrorism.
Medical professionals between
the ages of 25 and 40 are in-
vited. The event will take place
7 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Southfield
Radisson's Skyline Club. Call

Cancer
Sinai Hospital is offering a free
discussion for patients with
cancer, their family members
and friends. "Moving Ahead,
Resources For Survival" will
be discussed from 7 to 9 p.m.
on July 28 at Oakland In-

A "Breast Cancer Discussion
Group" will meet 7 to 8:30 p.m.
on Aug. 8 at the Sinai Berry
Health Center in Farmington
Hills. It is designed exclusive-
ly for women with a breast can-
cer diagnosis. Preregistration

Immunizations

The Oakland County Health
Division will offer an immu-
nization clinic for Farmington
and surrounding areas at the
Clarenceville United Methodist
Church in Clarenceville 9 a.m.
to noon Aug. 10.
Immunizations for measles,
German measles, mumps, po-
lio and other illnesses will be
available. A parent or legal
guardian must accompany a
child under 18 years of age.
